Jesus Is Raised

1 AND on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalen came very early, whilst yet some darkness remained, to the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

1 (A)Now on the first day of the week (B)Mary Magdalene *came early to the tomb, while it *was still dark, and *saw (C)the stone already taken away from the tomb.

1 On(A) the first day of the week(B) Mary Magdalene(C) came to the tomb(D) early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone(E) had been removed(a) from the tomb.

1 On the first day of the week, early in the morning and while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and noticed that the stone had been removed from the tomb.

2 She therefore runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

2 Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

2 So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other (D)disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “(E)They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”

2 So she ran to Simon Peter(F) and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,(G) and we don’t know where they have put Him!”

2 So she ran off and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus kept loving. She told them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put him!"

3 Then Peter went out, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.

3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.

3 (F)So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb.

3 At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb.

3 So Peter and the other disciple took off for the tomb.

4 And they two ran together: and the other disciple ran before more swiftly than Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

4 So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

4 The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first;

4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first.

4 The two of them were running together, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and came to the tomb first.

5 And stooping forward, he sees the swathing clothes lying there; yet he did not go in.

5 And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.

5 and (G)stooping and looking in, he *saw the (H)linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in.

5 Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths(H) lying there, yet he did not go in.

5 Bending over to look inside, he noticed the linen cloths lying there, but didn't go in.

6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and saw the swathing clothes lying,

6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,

6 And so Simon Peter also *came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he *saw the linen wrappings lying there,

6 Then, following him, Simon Peter came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.

6 At this point Simon Peter arrived, following him, and went straight into the tomb. He observed that the linen cloths were lying there,

7 and the napkin, which had been round his head, not laid with the linen swathes, but apart folded up in another place.

7 And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.

7 and (I)the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the (J)linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself.

7 The wrapping(I) that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths(J) but was folded up in a separate place by itself.

7 and that the handkerchief that had been on Jesus' head was not lying with the linen cloths but was rolled up in a separate place.

8 Then went in also the other disciple, who had come the first to the sepulchre, and saw, and believed.

8 Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.

8 So the other disciple who (K)had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.

8 The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then entered the tomb, saw, and believed.

8 Then the other disciple, who arrived at the tomb first, went inside, looked, and believed.

9 Though not even yet had they known the scripture, that he should rise from the dead.

9 For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

9 For as yet (L)they did not understand the Scripture, (M)that He must rise again from the dead.

9 For they still did not understand the Scripture(K) that He must rise(L) from the dead.(M)

9 For they did not yet understand the Scripture that said that Jesus had to rise from the dead.

Jesus Appears To Mary Magdalene

10 Then the disciples went back again to their companions.

10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

10 So the disciples went away again (N)to their own homes.

10 Then the disciples went home again.

10 So the disciples went back to their homes.

Mary Magdalene Sees The Risen Lord

11 But Mary stood at the sepulchre, without, weeping: as therefore she wept, she bent forward towards the sepulchre.

11 But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

11 (O)But Mary was standing outside the tomb weeping; and so, as she wept, she (P)stooped and looked into the tomb;

11 But(N) Mary stood outside facing the tomb,(O) crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb.

11 Meanwhile, Mary stood crying outside the tomb. As she cried, she bent over and looked into the tomb.

12 And saw two angels in white, sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

12 And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

12 and she *saw (Q)two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been lying.

12 She saw two angels(P) in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus’ body(Q) had been lying.

12 She saw two angels in white clothes who were sitting down, one at the head and the other at the foot of the place where Jesus' body had been lying.

13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

13 And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.

13 And they *said to her, “(R)Woman, why are you weeping?” She *said to them, “Because (S)they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid Him.”

13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you crying?”“Because they’ve taken away my Lord,”(R) she told them, “and I don’t know where they’ve put Him.”

13 They asked her, "Lady, why are you crying?" She told them, "Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don't know where they have put him."

14 And as she thus spoke, she turned about, and beheld Jesus standing by, and knew not that it was Jesus.

14 And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.

14 When she had said this, she turned around and *(T)saw Jesus standing there, and (U)did not know that it was Jesus.

14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus.(S)

14 After she had said this, she turned around and noticed Jesus standing there, without realizing that it was Jesus.

15 Then Jesus said to her, Woman, why art thou weeping? whom art thou seeking? She, supposing that it was the gardener, said to him, Sir, if thou hast carried him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

15 Jesus *said to her, (V)Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing Him to be the gardener, she *said to Him, “Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him, and I will take Him away.”

15 “Woman,” Jesus said to her, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, “Sir, if you’ve removed Him, tell me where you’ve put Him, and I will take Him away.”

15 Jesus asked her, "Dear lady, why are you crying? Who are you looking for?" Thinking he was the gardener, she told him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will take him away."

16 Jesus saith to her, Mary! Starting round, she said to him, Rabboni! that is, Master!

16 Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.

16 Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him (W)in (a)Hebrew, “(X)Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher).

16 Jesus said, “Mary.”Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!”(b)—which means “Teacher.”(T)

16 Jesus told her, "Mary!" She turned around and told him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means "Teacher").

17 Jesus saith to her, Touch me not; for I have not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and tell them, I am ascending to my Father, and your Father; to my God, and your God.

17 Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.

17 Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to (Y)My brethren and say to them, ‘I (Z)ascend to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’”

17 “Don’t cling to Me,” Jesus told her, “for I have not yet ascended(U) to the Father.(V) But go to My brothers(W) and tell them that I am ascending to My Father(X) and your Father—to My God(Y) and your God.”

17 Jesus told her, "Don't hold on to me, because I haven't yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and tell them, "I'm ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'"

18 Mary Magdalen cometh declaring to the disciples, that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things to her.

18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.

18 (AA)Mary Magdalene *came, (AB)announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.

18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!”(Z) And she told them what(c) He had said to her.

18 So Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I've seen the Lord!" She also told them what he had told her.

Jesus Appears To The Disciples

19 When the evening therefore was come, on the same first day of the week, and the doors being fastened where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said unto them, Peace be to you.

19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for (AC)fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, (b)(AD)Peace be with you.”

19 In the evening of that first day of the week,(AA) the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace to you!”(AB)

19 It was the evening of the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Jesus came and stood among them. He told them, "Peace be with you."

20 And thus speaking, he shewed them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord.

20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.

20 And when He had said this, (AE)He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then (AF)rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

20 Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side.(AC) So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

20 After saying this, he showed them his hands and his side, and when they saw the Lord, the disciples were overjoyed.

21 Jesus therefore spake to them again, Peace be unto you: as the Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.

21 So Jesus said to them again, (AG)Peace be with you; (AH)as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me,(AD) I also send you.”(AE)

21 Jesus told them again, "Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you."

22 And so speaking, he breathed on them, and said, Receive the Holy Ghost:

22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

22 After saying this, He breathed on them(AF) and said,(d) “Receive the Holy Spirit.(AG)

22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and told them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.

23 whose soever sins ye forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins soever ye retain, they are retained.

23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

23 (AI)If you forgive the sins of any, their sins (c)have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained.”

23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”(AH)

23 If you forgive people's sins, they are forgiven. If you retain people's sins, they are retained."

Thomas Doubts But Later Believes

24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called Didymus, the twin, was not with them when Jesus came.

24 But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

24 But (AJ)Thomas, one of (AK)the twelve, called (d)(AL)Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.

24 But one of the Twelve, Thomas(AI) (called “Twin”), was not with them when Jesus came.

24 Thomas, one of the Twelve (called the Twin), wasn't with them when Jesus came.

25 Then the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Except I should see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I shall never believe it.

25 The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.

25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in (AM)His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, (AN)I will not believe.”

25 So the other disciples kept telling him, “We have seen the Lord!”But he said to them, “If I don’t see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails,(AJ) and put my hand into His side,(AK) I will never believe!”(AL)

25 So the other disciples kept telling him, "We've seen the Lord!" But he told them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, put my finger into them, and put my hand into his side, I'll never believe!"

26 And eight days after, his disciples were again within, and Thomas with them: Jesus cometh, though the doors were fastened, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

26 And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.

26 (e)After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been (f)shut, and stood in their midst and said, (AO)Peace be with you.”

26 After eight days His disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “Peace to you!”

26 A week later, his disciples were again inside, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were shut, Jesus came, stood among them, and said, "Peace be with you."

27 Afterwards he spake to Thomas, Bring hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and take thy hand, and thrust into my side: and be not incredulous, but a believer.

27 Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.

27 Then He *said to Thomas, (AP)Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.”

27 Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and observe My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Don’t be an unbeliever, but a believer.”(AM)

27 Then he told Thomas, "Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Take your hand, and put it into my side. Stop doubting, but believe."

28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God!

28 And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.

28 Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

28 Thomas responded to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

28 Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"

29 Jesus saith to him, Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, hast thou believed: blessed are they who though they have not seen me, yet have believed.

29 Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.

29 Jesus *said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? (AQ)Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed.”

29 Jesus said, “Because you have seen Me, you have believed.(e) Those who believe without seeing(AN) are blessed.”

29 Jesus told him, "Is it because you've seen me that you have believed? How blessed are those who have never seen me and yet have believed!"

Why This Book Was Written

30 Now many other miracles did Jesus therefore also in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

30 (AR)Therefore many other (g)(AS)signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;

30 Jesus performed many other signs(AO) in the presence of His disciples that are not written(AP) in this book.(AQ)

30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not recorded in this book.

31 but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

31 but these have been written (AT)so that you may believe that Jesus is (h)the Christ, (AU)the Son of God; and that (AV)believing you may have life in His name.

31 But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah,(AR) the Son(AS) of God,(f)(AT) and by believing you may have life in His name.(AU)

31 But these have been recorded so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and so that through believing you may have life in his name.
