A Paralytic Is Healed
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, in Aramaic called Bethesda, which has five roofed colonnades.
2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
2 Now there is in Jerusalem by (B)the sheep gate a pool, which is called (C)in (a)Hebrew (b)Bethesda, having five porticoes.
2 By the Sheep Gate(B) in Jerusalem there is a pool, called Bethesda(a) in Hebrew, which has five colonnades.(b)
2 Near the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew. It has five colonnades,
3 In these lay a multitude of invalids--blind, lame, and paralyzed.
3 In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.
3 In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [(c)waiting for the moving of the waters;
3 Within these lay a large number of the sick—blind, lame, and paralyzed [—waiting for the moving of the water,
3 and under these a large number of sick people were lying blind, lame, or paralyzed waiting for the movement of the water.
4 One man was there who had been an invalid for thirty-eight years.
4 For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
4 for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.]
4 because an angel would go down into the pool from time to time and stir up the water. Then the first one who got in after the water was stirred up recovered from whatever ailment he had].(c)
4 At certain times an angel of the Lord would go down into the pool and stir up the water, and whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was healed of whatever disease he had.
5 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be healed?"
5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.
5 One man was there who had been sick for 38 years.
5 One particular man was there who had been ill for 38 years.
6 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, and while I am going another steps down before me."
6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?
6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He *said to him, “Do you wish to get well?”
6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had already been there a long time,(C) He said to him, “Do you want to get well?”
6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?"
7 Jesus said to him, "Get up, take up your bed, and walk."
7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.
7 The sick man answered Him, “Sir, I have no man to put me into the pool when (D)the water is stirred up, but while I am coming, another steps down before me.”
7 “Sir,”(D) the sick man answered, “I don’t have a man to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me.”
7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I don't have anyone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up. While I'm trying to get there, someone else steps down ahead of me."
9 So the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to take up your bed."
9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.
9 Immediately the man became well, and picked up his pallet and began to walk.(F)Now it was the Sabbath on that day.
9 Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk. Now that day was the Sabbath,(E)
9 The man immediately became well, and he picked up his mat and started walking. Now that day was a Sabbath.
10 But he answered them, "The man who healed me, that man said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'"
10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.
10 So (G)the Jews were saying to the man who was cured, “It is the Sabbath, and (H)it is not permissible for you to carry your pallet.”
10 so the Jews(F) said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath!(G) It’s illegal for you to pick up your mat.”
10 So the Jewish leaders told the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat.
11 They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your bed and walk'?"
11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.
11 But he answered them, “He who made me well was the one who said to me, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk.’”
11 But he answered them, "The man who made me well told me, "Pick up your mat and walk.'"
12 Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in the place.
12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?
12 They asked him, “Who is the man who said to you, ‘Pick up your pallet and walk’?”
12 “Who is this man who told you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk’?” they asked.
12 They asked him, "Who is the man who told you, "Pick it up and walk'?"
Equal With God
13 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you."
13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.
13 But the man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away while there was a crowd in that place.
13 But the man who was cured did not know who it was,(I) because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.(d)
13 But the one who had been healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away from the crowd in that place.
14 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.
14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.
14 Afterward Jesus *found him in the temple and said to him, “Behold, you have become well; do not (I)sin anymore, (J)so that nothing worse happens to you.”
14 After this, Jesus found him in the temple complex(J) and said to him, “See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.”
14 Later on, Jesus found him in the Temple and told him, "Look! You have become well. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you."
Honoring The Father And The Son
16 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I am working."
16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.
16 For this reason (L)the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.
16 Therefore, the Jews began persecuting(L) Jesus(e) because He was doing these things on the Sabbath.(M)
16 So the Jewish leaders began persecuting Jesus, because he kept doing such things on the Sabbath.
Jesus Is Equal With God
17 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
17 But He answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.”
17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father has been working until now, and I, too, am working."
The Authority Of The Son
18 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise.
18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
18 For this reason therefore (M)the Jews (N)were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, (O)making Himself equal with God.
18 This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill Him:(O) Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
18 So the Jewish leaders were trying all the harder to kill him, because he was not only breaking the Sabbath but was also calling God his own Father, thereby making himself equal to God.
19 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.
19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
19 Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (P)the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever (e)the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.
19 Then Jesus replied, “I assure you: The Son is not able to do anything on His own, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father(f) does, the Son also does these things in the same way.(P)
19 Jesus told them, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the Son can do nothing on his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing, What the Father does, the Son does likewise.
20 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will.
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
20 (Q)For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself is doing; and the Father will show Him (R)greater works than these, so that you will marvel.
20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him everything He is doing, and He will show Him greater works(Q) than these so that you will be amazed.
20 The Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing, and he will show him even greater actions than these, so that you may be amazed.
21 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son,
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
21 For just as the Father raises the dead and (S)gives them life, even so (T)the Son also gives life to whom He wishes.
21 And just as the Father raises(R) the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to anyone He wants to.(S)
21 Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to those he chooses.
Life And Judgment
23 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
23 That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.
23 so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. (V)He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
23 so that all people will honor the Son just as they honor the Father.(U) Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.(V)
23 so that everyone may honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
24 "Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
24 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and (W)believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and (X)does not come into judgment, but has (Y)passed out of death into life.
24 “I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life(W) and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.
24 "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, whoever hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged, but has passed from death to life.
25 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
25 Truly, truly, I say to you, (Z)an hour is coming and now is, when (AA)the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who (AB)hear will live.
25 “I assure you: An hour is coming, and is now here,(X) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.(Y)
25 Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the time approaches, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear it will live.
26 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He (AC)gave to the Son also to have life in Himself;
26 For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son(Z) to have life in Himself.
26 Just as the Father has life in himself, so also he has granted the Son to have life in himself,
28 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
28 Do not marvel at this; for (AE)an hour is coming, in which (AF)all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
28 Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice
28 Don't be amazed at this, because the time is approaching when everyone in their graves will hear the Son of Man's voice
Witnesses To Jesus
29 "I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.
29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.
29 and will come forth; (AG)those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
29 and come out—those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of judgment.
29 and will come out those who have done what is good to the resurrection that leads to life, and those who have practiced what is evil to the resurrection that ends in condemnation.
Further Testimony About The Son
30 If I alone bear witness about myself, my testimony is not deemed true.
30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.
30 “(AH)I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and (AI)My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but (AJ)the will of Him who sent Me.
30 “I can do nothing on My own. I judge only as I hear, and My judgment(AC) is righteous,(AD) because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.(AE)
30 I can do nothing on my own accord. I judge according to what I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me."
32 You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth.
32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.
32 There is (AL)another who testifies of Me, and I know that the testimony which He gives about Me is true.
32 There is Another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony He gives about Me is valid.(h)(AF)
32 There is another who testifies about me, and I know that the testimony he gives about me is true.
34 He was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.
34 But (AN)the testimony which I receive is not from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved.
34 I don’t receive man’s testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved.
34 I myself do not accept human testimony, but I am saying these things so that you may be saved.
35 But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me that the Father has sent me.
35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.
35 He was (AO)the lamp that was burning and was shining and you (AP)were willing to rejoice for (h)a while in his light.
35 John(i)(AH) was a burning and shining lamp,(AI) and for a time you were willing to enjoy his light.(AJ)
35 That man John was a lamp that burns and brightly shines, and for a while you were willing to rejoice in his light.
36 And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me. His voice you have never heard, his form you have never seen,
36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
36 But the testimony which I have is greater than the testimony of John; for (AQ)the works which the Father has given Me (AR)to accomplish—the very works that I do—testify about Me, that the Father (AS)has sent Me.
36 “But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish.(AK) These very works I am doing testify about Me that the Father has sent(AL) Me.
36 "But I have a greater testimony than John's, because the actions that the Father has given me to complete the very actions that I am doing testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.
37 and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.
37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.
37 And the Father who sent Me, (AT)He has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time nor seen His form.
37 The Father who sent Me has Himself testified(AM) about Me. You have not heard His voice at any time, and you haven’t seen His form.(AN)
37 Moreover, the Father who sent me has himself testified on my behalf. You have never heard his voice or seen what he looks like,
38 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,
38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.
38 You don’t have His word living in you, because you don’t believe the One He sent.
38 nor do you have his word at work in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he sent.
39 yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
39 (i)(AW)You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is (AX)these that testify about Me;
39 You pore over(j) the Scriptures(AO) because you think you have eternal life in them, yet they testify about Me.(AP)
39 You examine the Scriptures carefully because you suppose that in them you have eternal life. Yet they testify about me.
42 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.
42 but I know you, that you do not have the love of God in yourselves.
42 I know that you do not have the love of God in you.
43 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
43 I am come in my Father's name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.
43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; (AZ)if another comes in his own name, you will receive him.
43 I have come in My Father’s name,(AU) yet you don’t accept Me.(AV) If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.
43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me. Yet if another man comes in his own name, you will accept him.
44 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope.
44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
44 How can you believe, when you (BA)receive (j)glory from one another and you do not seek (BB)the (k)glory that is from (BC)the one and only God?
44 How can you believe? While accepting glory from one another, you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only(AW) God.(AX)
44 How can you believe when you accept each other's praise and do not look for the praise that comes from the only God?
45 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father; the one who accuses you is (BD)Moses, in whom you have set your hope.
45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(AY) on whom you have set your hope.
45 Do not suppose that I will be the one to accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom you have set your hope,
46 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me.
46 because if you believed Moses, you would believe me, since he wrote about me.
