The People Of Nineveh Repent At Jonah's Proclamation
2 "Up, and get thee to Nineveh that great city, and preach unto them the preaching which I bade thee."
2 Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee.
2 “Arise, go to (A)Nineveh the great city and (B)proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.”
2 "Get up and go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you."
3 And he arose and went to Nineveh at the LORD's commandment. Nineveh was a great city unto God, containing three days journey.
3 So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey.

4 And Jonah went to and entered into the city even a day's journey, and cried, saying, "There shall not pass forty days but Nineveh shall be overthrown."
4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
4 Then Jonah began to go through the city one day’s walk; and he (D)cried out and said, “Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”
4 Jonah set out on the first day of his walk in the city and proclaimed,(E) “In 40 days Nineveh will be demolished!”
4 Now Nineveh was a very large city, requiring a three-day journey to cross through it. As Jonah started into the city on the first day's journey, he proclaimed the message, "40 days more and Nineveh will be overthrown!"
5 And the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed fasting, and arrayed themselves in sackcloth, as well the great as the small of them.

The King's Proclamation
6 And the tidings came unto the king of Nineveh, which arose out of his seat, and did his apparel off and put on sackcloth, and sat him down in ashes.
6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

7 And it was cried and commanded in Nineveh by the authority of the king and of his lords, saying, "See that neither man or beast, ox or sheep taste ought at all, and that they neither feed or drink water."
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
7 He issued a (G)proclamation and it said, “In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let man, beast, herd, or flock taste a thing. Do not let them eat or drink water.
7 Then he issued a decree(H) in Nineveh:By order of the king and his nobles: No man or beast, herd or flock, is to taste anything at all. They must not eat or drink water.
7 Then he had this proclamation published throughout Nineveh: "By decree of the king and his nobles:
8 And they put on sackcloth both man and beast, and cried unto God mightily, and turned every man from his wicked way, and from doing wrong in which they were accustomed, saying,
8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
8 But both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth; and let (c)men (H)call on God earnestly that each may (I)turn from his wicked way and from the violence which is in (d)his hands.
8 Furthermore, both man and beast must be covered with sackcloth, and everyone must call out earnestly to God.(I) Each must turn from his evil ways(J) and from the violence(d) he is doing.(e)
8 No man or animal, herd or flock, is to taste anything, graze, or drink water. Instead, let both man and animal clothe themselves with sackcloth and cry out to God forcefully. Let every person turn from his evil ways and from his tendency to do violence.
9 "Who can tell whether God will turn and repent, and cease from his fierce wrath, that we perish not?"

10 And when God saw their works, how they turned from their wicked ways, he repented on the evil which he said he would do unto them, and did it not.
10 And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
10 When God saw their deeds, that they (K)turned from their wicked way, then (L)God relented concerning the calamity which He had declared He would (e)bring upon them. And He did not do it.
10 Then God saw their actions—that they had turned from their evil ways(M)—so God relented from the disaster(N) He had threatened to do to them. And He did not do it.
10 God took note of what they did that they turned from their evil ways. Because God relented concerning the trouble about which he had warned them, he did not carry it out.
