“I have surely heard Ephraim grieving,
‘You have chastised me, and I was chastised,
Like an untrained calf;

Bring me back that I may be restored,

For You are the Lord my God.

Even when their survivors escape, they will be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them

mourning, each over his own iniquity.

“I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

Immediately a rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had made the remark to him, “Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.”

And he began to weep.

Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall.

I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us.
