Human Traditions And God's Commandments

1 Then the Pharisees, and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem.

1 (A)The Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered around Him when they had come (B)from Jerusalem,

1 Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

1 The(A) Pharisees(B) and some of the scribes(C) who had come from Jerusalem(D) gathered around Him.

1 The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus.

2 Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault.

2 and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with (C)impure hands, that is, unwashed.

2 And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

2 They observed that some of His disciples were eating their bread with unclean(E)—that is, unwashed—hands.

2 They noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them.

3 (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, don't eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders.

3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they (a)carefully wash their hands, thus observing the (D)traditions of the elders;

3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

3 (For the Pharisees, in fact all the Jews, will not eat unless they wash their hands ritually, keeping the tradition of the elders.

3 (The Pharisees and indeed all the Jewish people don't eat unless they wash their hands properly, following the tradition of their elders.

4 They don't eat when they come from the marketplace, unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things, which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)

4 and when they come from the market place, they do not eat unless they (b)cleanse themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the (c)washing of (E)cups and pitchers and copper pots.)

4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

4 When they come from the marketplace,(F) they do not eat unless they have washed.(G) And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, jugs, copper utensils, and dining couches.(a)(H))

4 They don't eat anything from the marketplace unless they dip it in water. They also observe many other traditions, such as the proper washing of washing cups, jars, brass pots, and dinner tables.)

5 The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?"

5 The Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the (F)tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with (G)impure hands?”

5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

5 Then the Pharisees(I) and the scribes(J) asked Him, “Why don’t Your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders,(K) instead of eating bread with ritually unclean(b) hands?”

5 So the Pharisees and the scribes asked Jesus, "Why don't your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders? Instead, they eat with unclean hands."

6 He answered them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

6 And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:(H)This people honors Me with their lips,But their heart is far away from Me.

6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

6 He answered them, “Isaiah(L) prophesied(M) correctly about you hypocrites,(N) as it is written:(O)These people honor(P) Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.

6 He told them, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. As it is written, "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

7 But in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'

7 (I)But in vain do they worship Me,Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’

7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

7 They worship Me in vain,teaching(Q) as doctrines(R) the commands(S) of men.(T)(c)

7 Their worship of me is worthless, because they teach human rules as doctrines.'

8 "For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men -- the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things."

8 Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the (J)tradition of men.”

8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

8 Disregarding the command of God, you keep the tradition of men.”(d)

8 You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition."

9 He said to them, "Full well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.

9 He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your (K)tradition.

9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

9 He also said to them, “You completely invalidate God’s command in order to maintain(e) your tradition!

9 Then he told them, "You have such a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your own tradition!

10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother;' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.'

10 For Moses said, ‘(L)Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘(M)He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to (d)be put to death’;

10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

10 For Moses(U) said:Honor your father and your mother;(V)(f) andWhoever speaks evil of father or mothermust be put to death.(W)(g)

10 Because Moses said, "Honor your father and your mother,' and, "Whoever curses his father or mother must certainly be put to death.'

11 But you say, 'If a man tells his father or his mother, "Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban, that is to say, given to God;"'

11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is (N)Corban (that is to say, (e)given to God),’

11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.

11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit(X) you might have received from me is Corban’” (that is, a gift(Y) committed to the temple),

11 But you say, "If anyone tells his father or mother, "Whatever support you might have received from me is Corban,"' (that is, an offering to God)

12 then you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother,

12 you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother;

12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;

12 “you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.

12 "you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother.'

13 making void the word of God by your tradition, which you have handed down. You do many things like this."

13 thus invalidating the word of God by your (O)tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

13 You revoke God’s word(Z) by your tradition that you have handed(AA) down. And you do many other similar things.”

13 You are destroying the word of God through your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other things like that."

Defilement From Within

14 He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand.

14 After He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:

14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:

14 Summoning(AB) the crowd again, He told them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand:(AC)

14 Then he called to the crowd again and told them, "Listen to me, all of you, and understand!

15 There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.

15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.

15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

15 Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.

15 Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It's what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean.

16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!"

16 [(f)If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”]

16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

16 [If anyone has ears to hear, he should listen!]”(h)

16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen!"

17 When he had entered into a house away from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable.

17 When he had left the crowd and entered (P)the house, (Q)His disciples questioned Him about the parable.

17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

17 When He went into the house away from the crowd, the disciples asked Him about the parable.

17 When he had left the crowd and gone home, his disciples began asking him about the parable.

18 He said to them, "Are you thus without understanding also? Don't you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can't defile him,

18 And He *said to them, “Are you so lacking in understanding also? Do you not understand that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him,

18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

18 And He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don’t you realize that nothing going into a man from the outside can defile him?

18 He asked them, "Are you so ignorant? Don't you know that nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean?

19 because it doesn't go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, thus purifying all foods?"

19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and (g)is eliminated?” (Thus He declared (R)all foods (S)clean.)

19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

19 For it doesn’t go into his heart but into the stomach(AD) and is eliminated.”(i) (As a result, He made all foods clean.(j)(AE))

19 Because it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then into the sewer, thereby expelling all foods."

20 He said, "That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man.

20 And He was saying, (T)That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man.

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

20 Then He said, “What comes out of a person—that defiles him.

20 Then he continued, "It's what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean,

21 For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, (h)fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries,

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

21 For from within, out of people’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities,(AF) thefts, murders,(AG)

21 because it's from within, from the human heart, that evil thoughts come, as well as sexual immorality, stealing, murder,

22 covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.

22 deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, (i)(U)envy, slander, (j)pride and foolishness.

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

22 adulteries,(AH) greed,(AI) evil actions, deceit,(AJ) promiscuity,(AK) stinginess,(k) blasphemy,(AL) pride,(AM) and foolishness.(AN)

22 adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness.

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."

23 All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

23 All these evil things come from within and defile a person.”

23 All these things come from inside and make a person unclean."

A Syrophoenician Woman's Great Faith

24 From there he arose, and went away into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. He entered into a house, and didn't want anyone to know it, but he couldn't escape notice.

24 (V)Jesus got up and went away from there to the region of (W)Tyre(k). And when He had entered a house, He wanted no one to know of it; (l)yet He could not escape notice.

24 And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.

24 He got up and departed from(AO) there to the region of Tyre(AP) and Sidon.(l)(AQ) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it, but He could not escape notice.

24 Jesus left that place and went to the territory of Tyre and Sidon. He went into a house, not wanting anyone to know he was there. However, it couldn't be kept a secret.

25 For a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet.

25 But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet.

25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

25 Instead, immediately after hearing about Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit(AR) came and fell at His feet.(AS)

25 In fact, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him and came and fell down at his feet.

26 Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. She begged him that he would cast the demon out of her daughter.

26 Now the woman was a (m)Gentile, of the Syrophoenician race. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

26 Now the woman was Greek,(AT) a Syrophoenician by birth, and she kept asking Him to drive the demon(AU) out of her daughter.

26 Now the woman happened to be a Greek, born in Phoenicia in Syria. She kept asking him to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 But Jesus said to her, "Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

27 And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not (n)good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”

27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

27 He said to her, “Allow the children to be satisfied first, because it isn’t right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”(AV)

27 But he kept telling her, "First let the children be filled. It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the puppies."

28 But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."

28 But she answered and *said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.”

28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.

28 But she replied to Him, “Lord,(AW) even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

28 But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. Yet even the puppies under the table eat some of the children's crumbs."

29 He said to her, "For this saying, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter."

29 And He said to her, “Because of this (o)answer go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.”

29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

29 Then He told her, “Because of this reply, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter.”

29 Then he told her, "Because you have said this, go! The demon has left your daughter."

30 She went away to her house, and found the child having been laid on the bed, with the demon gone out.

30 And going back to her home, she found the child (p)lying on the bed, the demon having left.

30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

30 When she went back to her home, she found her child lying on the bed, and the demon was gone.

30 So she went home and found her child lying in bed, and the demon was gone.

A Man Deaf And Unable To Speak Healed

31 Again he departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the region of Decapolis.

31 (X)Again He went out from the region of (Y)Tyre, and came through Sidon to (Z)the Sea of Galilee, within the region of (AA)Decapolis.

31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

31 Again, leaving the region of Tyre,(AX) He went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee,(AY) through(m) the region of the Decapolis.(AZ)

31 Then Jesus left the territory of Tyre and passed through Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the territory of the Decapolis.

32 They brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech. They begged him to lay his hand on him.

32 They *brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they *implored Him to (AB)lay His hand on him.

32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.

32 They brought to Him a deaf(BA) man who also had a speech difficulty,(BB) and begged Jesus to lay His hand on(BC) him.

32 Some people brought him a deaf man who also had a speech impediment. They begged him to lay his hand on him.

33 He took him aside from the multitude, privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue.

33 (AC)Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after (AD)spitting, He touched his tongue with the saliva;

33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;

33 So He took him away from the crowd privately. After putting His fingers in the man’s ears and spitting,(BD) He touched his tongue.

33 Jesus took him away from the crowd to be alone with him. Putting his fingers into the man's ears, he touched the man's tongue with saliva.

34 Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!"

34 and looking up to heaven with a deep (AE)sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!”

34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

34 Then, looking up to heaven,(BE) He sighed deeply and said to him, “Ephphatha!”(n) (that is, “Be opened!”).

34 Then he looked up to heaven, sighed, and told him, "Ephphatha," that is, "Be opened!"

35 Immediately his ears were opened, and the impediment of his tongue was released, and he spoke clearly.

35 And his ears were opened, and the (q)impediment of his tongue (r)was removed, and he began speaking plainly.

35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.

35 Immediately his ears were opened,(BF) his speech difficulty was removed,(o) and he began to speak clearly.(BG)

35 The man's hearing and speech were restored at once, and he began to talk normally.

36 He commanded them that they should tell no one, but the more he commanded them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it.

36 And (AF)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He ordered them, the more widely they (AG)continued to proclaim it.

36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;

36 Then He ordered them to tell no one,(BH) but the more He would order them, the more they would proclaim(BI) it.

36 Jesus ordered the people not to tell anyone, but the more he kept ordering them, the more they kept spreading the news.

37 They were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear, and the mute speak!"

37 They were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

37 They were extremely astonished and said, “He has done everything well!(BJ) He even makes deaf(BK) people hear, and people unable to speak,(BL) talk!”

37 Amazed beyond measure, they kept on saying, "He does everything well! He even makes deaf people hear and mute people talk!"
