Then he released Barabbas for them, but [after] he had Jesus flogged, he handed [him] over so that he could be crucified.
And there was one named Barabbas, in prison with those who had gone against the government and in the fight had taken life.
But the people were moved by the chief priests to make him let Barabbas go free.
And Pilate, desiring to do what was pleasing to the people, let Barabbas go free, and gave up Jesus, when he had been whipped, to be put to death on the cross.
But they all cried out together, "Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas"
But they cried out all together, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas: --
Barabbas had been imprison'd for murder in a riot he had rais'd in the city.
and released the man they had asked for [i.e., Barabbas], who had been thrown into prison for [inciting] a rebellion and committing murder. But he turned Jesus over to the people do with Him whatever they wanted.
therefore they all cried out again, saying, 'Not this one -- but Barabbas;' and Barabbas was a robber.

Barabbas » A prisoner released by pilate
And he sitting on his tribunal, his wife sent to him, saying, Let there be nothing to thee and that just man: for this day I suffered many things in a dream on account of Him. And the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. And the governor responding said to them, Which of the two do you wish that I shall release unto you? And they said Barabbas. Pilate says to them, Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ? They all say to him, Let Him be crucified. And the governor said, For what evil hath He done? And they continued to cry out more vociferously, saying, Let Him be crucified. And Pilate seeing that he profits nothing, but rather an uproar supervenes, having taken water, washed his hands in the presence of the multitude, saying, For I am free from the blood of this just one: you shall see to it. And all the people responding said, His blood be upon us, and upon our children. Then he released unto them Barabbas.And having scourged Jesus, delivered Him up that He should be crucified.
For he knew that the chief priests had delivered Him on account of envy. And the chief priests persuaded the multitude that he should rather release unto them Barabbas. And Pilate responding again said to them, Then what do you wish that I shall do unto Him whom you call the King of the Jews. And they again cried out, Crucify Him. And Pilate said to them, For what evil hath He done? And they cried out uproariously, Crucify Him. And Pilate, wishing to do the multitude a favor, released unto them Barabbas.And having scourged Jesus, he delivered Him up that He should be crucified.
And they continued to shout aloud, saying, Crucify Him, crucify Him. And he spoke to them the third time, For what evil hath He done? I found nothing in Him worthy of death: therefore having scourged Him, I will release Him. And they continued to lay on with great voices, demanding that He should be crucified: and the voices of them and the high priests continued to grow stronger. And Pilate decided that their request should be granted. And released him who on account of sedition and murder had been cast into prison, and delivered up Jesus according to their wish.
