Now in the fifteenth year of the rule of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being ruler of Judaea, and Herod being king of Galilee, his brother Philip king of the country of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias king of Abilene,
There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
And the whole company of them rose up, and brought him before Pilate.
And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest.
And Pilate said unto the chief priests and the multitudes, I find no fault in this man.
But when Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.
And Herod with his soldiers set him at nought, and mocked him, and arraying him in gorgeous apparel sent him back to Pilate.
And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day: for before they were at enmity between themselves.
And Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
Pilate said to them, You have brought this Man to me as perverting the people. And behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no fault in this Man regarding those things of which you accuse Him;
For Pilate was required to release one prisoner to the people at the [Passover] Festival}}.
Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed to them again.
And Pilate spake unto them again, desiring to release Jesus;
So, Pilate called out to them a third time, "Why [should he be crucified]; what wrong has this man done? I have not found any reason for putting him to death, so I will punish him and [then] release him."
So Pilate gave sentence that their demand should be granted.
And Pilate gave sentence that what they asked for should be done.
This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

having chastised, therefore, I will release him,' for it was necessary for him to release to them one at every feast, and they cried out -- the whole multitude -- saying, 'Away with this one, and release to us Barabbas,' who had been, because of a certain sedition made in the city, and murder, cast into prison. Pilate again then -- wishing to release Jesus -- called to them, but they were calling out, saying, 'Crucify, crucify him.' And he a third time said unto them, 'Why, what evil did he? no cause of death did I find in him; having chastised him, then, I will release him.' And they were pressing with loud voices asking him to be crucified, and their voices, and those of the chief priests, were prevailing, and Pilate gave judgment for their request being done,
and entered again to the praetorium, and saith to Jesus, 'Whence art thou?' and Jesus gave him no answer. Pilate, therefore, saith to him, 'To me dost thou not speak? hast thou not known that I have authority to crucify thee, and I have authority to release thee?' Jesus answered, 'Thou wouldest have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.' From this time was Pilate seeking to release him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, 'If this one thou mayest release, thou art not a friend of Caesar; every one making himself a king, doth speak against Caesar.' Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus without -- and he sat down upon the tribunal -- to a place called, 'Pavement,' and in Hebrew, Gabbatha;
