Treasury of Scripture Knowledge
How our fathers went down into Egypt, and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians vexed us, and our fathers:
They took their livestock and their property, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and
came to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him:
Jacob went down to Egypt and there he and our fathers died.
God said to Abram, “Know for certain that
your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years.
Now the time
that the sons of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years.
We remember the fish which we used to eat free in Egypt, the cucumbers and the melons and the leeks and the onions and the garlic,
not enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to have us die in the wilderness, but you would also lord it over us?
So they appointed
taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses.
the foremen of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, “Why have you not completed your required amount either yesterday or today in making brick as previously?”
Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, and imposed hard labor on us.
It was he who took
shrewd advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers so that they would expose their infants and they would not survive.
Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying,
