The Messiah's Reign

1 Why are the nations so violently moved, and why are the thoughts of the people so foolish?

1 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

1 Why are (A)the (a)nations in an uproarAnd the peoples (B)devising a vain thing?

1 Why(A) do the nations rebel(a)(B)and the peoples plot in vain?(C)

1 Why are the nations in an uproar, and their people involved in a vain plot?

2 The kings of the earth have taken their place, and the rulers are fixed in their purpose, against the Lord, and against the king of his selection, saying,

2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

2 The (C)kings of the earth take their standAnd the rulers take counsel together(D)Against the Lord and against His (b)(E)Anointed, saying,

2 The kings of the earth take their stand,(D)and the rulers conspire togetheragainst the Lord and His Anointed One:(b)(E)

2 As the kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers conspire together against the LORD and his anointed one, they say,

3 Let their chains be broken, and their cords taken from off us.

3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

3 “Let us (F)tear their fetters apartAnd cast away their cords from us!”

3 “Let us tear off their chainsand free ourselves from their restraints.”(c)(F)

3 "Let us tear off their shackles from us, and cast off their chains."

4 Then he whose seat is in the heavens will be laughing: the Lord will make sport of them.

4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.

4 He who (c)sits in the heavens (G)laughs,The Lord (H)scoffs at them.

4 The One enthroned(d) in heaven laughs;the Lord ridicules them.(G)

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord scoffs at them.

5 Then will his angry words come to their ears, and by his wrath they will be troubled:

5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.

5 Then He will speak to them in His (I)angerAnd (J)terrify them in His fury, saying,

5 Then He speaks to them in His angerand terrifies them in His wrath:(H)

5 In his anger he rebukes them, and in his wrath he terrifies them:

6 But I have put my king on my holy hill of Zion.

6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

6 “But as for Me, I have (d)installed (K)My KingUpon Zion, (L)My holy mountain.”

6 “I have consecrated My King(e)on Zion, My holy mountain.”(I)

6 "I have set my king on Zion, my holy mountain."

7 I will make clear the Lord's decision: he has said to me, You are my son, this day have I given you being.

7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

7 “I will surely tell of the (e)decree of the Lord:He said to Me, ‘You are (M)My Son,Today I have begotten You.

7 I will declare the Lord’s decree:He said to Me, “You are My Son;(f)today I have become Your(g) Father.(J)

7 Let me announce the decree of the LORD that he told me: "You are my son, today I have become your father.

8 Make your request to me, and I will give you the nations for your heritage, and the farthest limits of the earth will be under your hand.

8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

8 ‘Ask of Me, and (N)I will surely give (O)the (f)nations as Your inheritance,And the very (P)ends of the earth as Your possession.

8 Ask of Me,and I will make the nations Your(h) inheritanceand the ends of the earth Your(i) possession.(K)

8 Ask of me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance, the ends of the earth as your possession.

9 They will be ruled by you with a rod of iron; they will be broken like a potter's vessel.

9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.

9 ‘You shall (g)(Q)break them with a (h)rod of iron,You shall (R)shatter them like (i)earthenware.’”

9 You will break(j) them with a rod of iron; You(k) will shatter them like pottery.”(l)(L)

9 You will break them with an iron rod, you will shatter them like pottery."

10 So now be wise, you kings: take his teaching, you judges of the earth.

10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.

10 Now therefore, O kings, (S)show discernment;Take warning, O (j)judges of the earth.

10 So now, kings, be wise;receive instruction, you judges of the earth.

10 Therefore, kings, act wisely! Earthly rulers, be warned!

11 Give worship to the Lord with fear, kissing his feet and giving him honour,

11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

11 (k)Worship the Lord with (l)(T)reverenceAnd rejoice with (U)trembling.

11 Serve the Lord with reverential aweand rejoice with trembling.(M)

11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

12 For fear that he may be angry, causing destruction to come on you, because he is quickly moved to wrath. Happy are all those who put their faith in him.

12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

12 (m)Do homage to (V)the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way,For (W)His wrath may (n)soon be kindled. How blessed are all who (X)take refuge in Him!

12 Pay homage to(m) the Son or He(n) will be angryand you will perish in your rebellion,(o)(N)for His(p) anger may ignite at any moment.(O)All those who take refuge in Him(q) are happy.(P)

12 Kiss the son before he becomes angry, and you die where you stand. Indeed, his wrath can flare up quickly. How blessed are those who take refuge in him. A Davidic Psalm, when he fled from his son Absalom.
