Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?

1 For the music director; a well-written song by the Korahites. As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God!

1 {To the chief Musician, Maschil, for the sons of Korah.} As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

1 For the choir director. A (a)Maskil of the sons of Korah. As the deer (b)pants for the water brooks,So my soul (c)(A)pants for You, O God.

1 BOOK II(Psalms 42–72)For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah. As a deer longs for streams of water,so I long for You, God.(A)

1 As an antelope pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, God.

2 I thirst for God, for the living God. I say, "When will I be able to go and appear in God's presence?"

2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

2 My soul (B)thirsts for God, for the (C)living God;When shall I come and (d)(D)appear before God?

2 I thirst for God, the living God.When can I come and appear before God?(B)

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When may I come and appear in God's presence?

3 I cannot eat, I weep day and night; all day long they say to me, "Where is your God?"

3 My tears have been my meat day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

3 My (E)tears have been my food day and night,While they (F)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

3 My tears have been my food day and night, while all day long people say to me,“Where is your God?”(C)

3 My tears have been my food day and night, while people keep asking me all day long, "Where is your God?"

4 I will remember and weep! For I was once walking along with the great throng to the temple of God, shouting and giving thanks along with the crowd as we celebrated the holy festival.

4 When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

4 These things I remember and I (G)pour out my soul within me.For I (H)used to go along with the throng and (e)lead them in procession to the house of God,With the voice of (I)joy and thanksgiving, a multitude keeping festival.

4 I remember this as I pour out my heart:(D)how I walked with many, leading the festive procession to the house of God,with joyful and thankful shouts.(E)

4 These things I will recall as I pour out my troubles within me: I used to go with the crowd in a procession to the house of God, accompanied with shouts of joy and thanksgiving.

5 Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention.

5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

5 (J)Why are you (f)(K)in despair, O my soul? And why have you become (L)disturbed within me?(g)(M)Hope in God, for I shall (h)again praise (i)HimFor the (j)(N)help of His presence.

5 Why am I so depressed? Why this turmoil within me?Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him,my Savior and my God.(F)

5 Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for once again I will praise him, since his presence saves me.

6 I am depressed, so I will pray to you while I am trapped here in the region of the upper Jordan, from Hermon, from Mount Mizar.

6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the hill Mizar.

6 O my God, my soul is (k)in despair within me;Therefore I (O)remember You from (P)the land of the JordanAnd the (l)peaks of (Q)Hermon, from Mount Mizar.

6 I(a) am deeply depressed;therefore I remember You from the land of Jordanand the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.(G)

6 My God, my soul feels depressed within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of Jordan, from the heights of Hermon, even from the foothills.

7 One deep stream calls out to another at the sound of your waterfalls; all your billows and waves overwhelm me.

7 Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

7 Deep calls to deep at the sound of Your waterfalls; All Your (R)breakers and Your waves have rolled over me.

7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls;all Your breakers and Your billows have swept over me.(H)

7 Deep waters call out to what is deeper still; at the roar of your waterfalls all your breakers and your waves swirled over me.

8 By day the Lord decrees his loyal love, and by night he gives me a song, a prayer to the living God.

8 Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.

8 The Lord will (S)command His lovingkindness in the daytime; And His song will be with me (T)in the night,A prayer to (U)the God of my life.

8 The Lord will send His faithful love by day;(I)His song will be with me in the night—a prayer to the God of my life.

8 By day the LORD will command his gracious love, and by night his song is with me a prayer to the God of my life.

9 I will pray to God, my high ridge: "Why do you ignore me? Why must I walk around mourning because my enemies oppress me?"

9 I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

9 I will say to God (V)my rock, “Why have You forgotten me?Why do I go (W)mourning (m)because of the (X)oppression of the enemy?”

9 I will say to God, my rock,(J)“Why have You forgotten me?Why must I go about in sorrowbecause of the enemy’s oppression?”(K)

9 I will ask God, my Rock, "Why have you forsaken me? Why do I go around mourning under the enemy's oppression?"

10 My enemies' taunts cut into me to the bone, as they say to me all day long, "Where is your God?"

10 As with a sword in my bones, mine enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

10 As a shattering of my bones, my adversaries revile me,While they (Y)say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

10 My adversaries taunt me,as if crushing my bones, while all day long they say to me,“Where is your God?”(L)

10 Like the shattering of my bones are the taunts of my oppressors, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?"

11 Why are you depressed, O my soul? Why are you upset? Wait for God! For I will again give thanks to my God for his saving intervention.

11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

11 (Z)Why are you (n)in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me?(o)Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,The (p)help of my countenance and my God.

11 Why am I so depressed? Why this turmoil within me?Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him,my Savior and my God.(M)

11 Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, for once again I will praise him, since his presence saves me and he is my God.
