Protection From Evildoers

1 Hear, God, as I express my concern; protect me from fear of the enemy.

1 {To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.} Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked, from the mob of those who practice evil,

2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:

2 Hide me from the (C)secret counsel of evildoers,From the tumult of (D)those who do iniquity,

2 Hide me from the scheming of wicked people,(C)from the mob of evildoers,(D)

2 Hide me from the secret counsel and conspiracy of the ungodly,From the scheming of those who do wrong,

3 who sharpen their tongues like swords, and aim their bitter words like arrows,

3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:

3 Who (E)have sharpened their tongue like a sword.They (F)aimed bitter speech as their arrow,

3 who sharpen their tongues like swordsand aim bitter words like arrows,(E)

3 Who have sharpened their tongues like a sword.They aim venomous words as arrows,

4 shooting at the innocent from concealment. Suddenly they shoot, fearing nothing.

4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.

4 To (G)shoot (b)from concealment at the blameless;Suddenly they shoot at him, and (H)do not fear.

4 shooting from concealed places at the innocent.They shoot at him suddenly and are not afraid.(F)

4 To shoot from ambush at the blameless [one];Suddenly they shoot at him, without fear.

5 They concoct an evil scheme for themselves; they enumerate their hidden snares; they say, "Who will see them?"

5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?

5 They (c)hold fast to themselves an evil purpose;They (d)talk of (I)laying snares secretly;They say, “(J)Who can see them?”

5 They encourage each other in an evil plan;(a)(b)they talk about hiding traps and say,“Who will see them?”(c)(G)

5 They encourage themselves in [their pursuit of] an evil agenda;They talk of laying snares secretly;They say, “Who will discover us?”

6 They devise wicked schemes, saying, "We have completed our plans, hiding them deep in our hearts."

6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.

6 They (e)devise injustices, saying,“We are (f)ready with a well-conceived plot”;For the (g)(K)inward thought and the heart of a man are (h)deep.

6 They devise crimes and say,“We have perfected a secret plan.”(H)The inner man and the heart are mysterious.

6 They devise acts of injustice, saying,“We are ready with a well-conceived plan.”For the inward thought and the heart of a man are deep (mysterious, unsearchable).

7 But God shot an arrow at them, and they were wounded immediately.

7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.

7 But (L)God (i)will shoot at them with an arrow;Suddenly (j)they will be wounded.

7 But God will shoot them with arrows;suddenly, they will be wounded.(I)

7 But God will shoot them with an [unexpected] arrow;Suddenly they will be wounded.

8 They tripped over their own tongues, and everyone who was watching ran away.

8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.

8 So (k)they (l)will (M)make him stumble;(N)Their own tongue is against them;All who see them will (O)shake the head.

8 They will be made to stumble;their own tongues work against them.All who see them will shake their heads.(J)

8 So they will be caused to stumble;Their own tongue is against them;All who gaze at them will shake the head [in scorn].

9 Everyone was gripped with fear and acknowledged God's deeds, understanding what he had done.

9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.

9 Then all men (m)will (P)fear,And they (n)will (Q)declare the work of God,And (o)will consider (p)what He has done.

9 Then everyone will fearand will tell about God’s work,for they will understand what He has done.(K)

9 Then all men will fear [God’s judgment];They will declare the work of God,And they will consider and wisely acknowledge what He has done.

10 The righteous rejoiced in the LORD, because they had fled to him for refuge. Let all the upright in heart exult. To the Director: A song. Lyrics by David.

10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.
