Reconciliation With God Through Faith In Christ

1 So, since we are made right with God by [our] faith, we have peace with Him through our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

1 (A)Therefore, having been justified by faith, (a)(B)we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

1 Therefore, since we have been declared righteous by faith,(A) we have peace(a) with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.(B)

1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus the Messiah.

2 Through Jesus we have also gained access by [our] faith to this unearned favor [of God]. We stand firm in it, and are glad that we have the hope of being honored by God.

2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

2 through whom also we have (C)obtained our introduction by faith into this grace (D)in which we stand; and (b)we exult in hope of the glory of God.

2 We have also obtained access through Him(C) by faith(b) into this grace in which we stand,(D) and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace by which we have been established, and we boast because of our hope in God's glory.

3 And not only this, but we also rejoice in our troubles, knowing that [experiencing] troubles produces endurance;

3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

3 (E)And not only this, but (c)we also (F)exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about (G)perseverance;

3 And not only that,(E) but we also rejoice in our afflictions,(F) because we know that affliction produces endurance,(G)

3 Not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance,

4 and endurance [produces God's] approval; and [His] approval [produces] hope.

4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

4 and (H)perseverance, (I)proven character; and proven character, hope;

4 endurance produces proven character,(H) and proven character produces hope.

4 endurance produces character, and character produces hope.

5 And [having such] hope keeps us from being disappointed, because God's love [for us] has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who was given to us [by God].

5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

5 and hope (J)does not disappoint, because the love of God has been (K)poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

5 This hope will not disappoint us,(I) because God’s love has been poured out in our hearts(J) through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

5 Now this hope does not disappoint us, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Those Declared Righteous Are Reconciled

6 For while we were still helpless, at [just] the proper time, Christ died for ungodly people.

6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

6 For while we were still (L)helpless, (M)at the right time (N)Christ died for the ungodly.

6 For while we were still helpless, at the appointed moment,(K) Christ died for the ungodly.

6 For at just the right time, while we were still powerless, the Messiah died for the ungodly.

7 Someone would not likely die to rescue a righteous person, though possibly someone would dare to die in order to rescue a good person.

7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; (d)though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.

7 For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die.

7 For it is rare for anyone to die for a righteous person, though somebody might be brave enough to die for a good person.

8 But God demonstrates His own love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

8 But God (O)demonstrates (P)His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, (Q)Christ died for us.

8 But God proves(L) His own love for us(M) in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us!

8 But God demonstrates his love for us by the fact that the Messiah died for us while we were still sinners.

9 Since we are now made right with God by the blood of Christ [i.e., by His dying on the cross], how much more certain it is that we will be saved from God's wrath [in the future] by Him!

9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

9 Much more then, having now been justified (e)(R)by His blood, we shall be saved (S)from the wrath of God through Him.

9 Much more then, since we have now been declared righteous by His blood,(N) we will be saved through Him from wrath.(O)

9 Now that we have been justified by his blood, how much more will we be saved from wrath through him!

10 For if while we were [God's] enemies, we were restored to fellowship with Him through the death of His Son, now that we have been restored, how much more [certainly] will we be saved [from condemnation] by His life!

10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

10 For if while we were (T)enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved (f)(U)by His life.

10 For if, while we were enemies,(P) we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, then how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by His life!(Q)

10 For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, will we be saved by his life!

11 And not only is this true, but we also rejoice in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have been restored to fellowship with God.

11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

11 (V)And not only this, (g)but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (W)the reconciliation.

11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ. We have now received this reconciliation through Him.(R)

11 Not only that, but we also continue to boast about God through our Lord Jesus the Messiah, through whom we have now been reconciled.

Death Came Through Adam But Life Comes Through Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through [the action of] one man [i.e., Adam] and [physical] death through that sin, so [physical] death has spread to all people, because all people have sinned. [Note: This difficult passage (verses 12-21) seems to be saying that the entire human race must experience physical death because of Adam's sin (I Cor. 5:22), which is somehow considered to be everyone's sin. See Murray, pp. 180-187, for a thorough discussion].

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

12 Therefore, just as through (X)one man sin entered into the world, and (Y)death through sin, and (Z)so death spread to all men, because all sinned—

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,(S) and death through sin,(T) in this way death spread to all men,(U) because all sinned.(c)

12 Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death resulted from sin, therefore everyone dies, because everyone has sinned.

13 For even before the law of Moses, sin was [being committed] in the world. But man is not responsible for [his] sin when there is no law.

13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

13 for (h)until the Law sin was in the world, but (AA)sin is not imputed when there is no law.

13 In fact, sin was in the world before the law, but sin is not charged to a person’s account when there is no law.(V)

13 Certainly sin was in the world before the Law was given, but no record of sin is kept when there is no Law.

14 Yet [physical] death ruled [over mankind] from the time of Adam to Moses, even over those people who had not sinned the way Adam did. [Now] Adam prefigured the coming of Jesus.

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned (AB)in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a (i)(AC)type of Him who was to come.

14 Nevertheless, death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin in the likeness of Adam’s transgression.(W) He is a prototype(d) of the Coming One.(X)

14 Nevertheless, death ruled from the time of Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin in the same way Adam did when he disobeyed. He is a foreshadowing of the one who would come.

15 But the free gift [of salvation through Christ] is not [exactly] like the sin [of Adam]. For if many people died [physically] because of the sin of the one man [i.e., Adam], how much more did God's favor abound by [providing] His gracious gift [of salvation] to many people because of the one man, Jesus Christ.

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

15 But (j)the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of (AD)the one (AE)the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by (AF)the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if by the one man’s trespass the many died, how much more have the grace of God and the gift overflowed to the many by the grace of the one man,(Y) Jesus Christ.

15 But God's free gift is not like Adam's offense. For if many people died as the result of one man's offense, how much more have God's grace and the free gift given through the kindness of one man, Jesus the Messiah, been showered on many people!

16 And the gift [of salvation] is not like [the effect of] one man's sin [i.e., Adam's], for [God's] judgment of condemnation came [upon mankind] through one man [i.e., Adam], but the free gift [of salvation] came as the result of [the] many sins [of mankind] and [it] made people right with God.

16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand (AG)the judgment arose from one transgression (k)resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions (l)resulting in justification.

16 And the gift is not like the one man’s sin, because from one sin came the judgment,(Z) resulting in condemnation, but from many trespasses came the gift, resulting in justification.(e)

16 Nor can the free gift be compared to what came through the man who sinned. For the sentence that followed one man's offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift brought justification, even after many offenses.

17 For if [physical] death ruled [over mankind] because of the sin of the one man [i.e., Adam], how much more will those who receive the abundance of God's unearned favor, and the gift of being right with Him, rule in [never ending] life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned (AH)through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will (AI)reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

17 Since by the one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive the overflow of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life(AA) through the one man, Jesus Christ.

17 For if, through one man, death ruled because of that man's offense, how much more will those who receive such overflowing grace and the gift of righteousness rule in life because of one man, Jesus the Messiah!

18 So then, just as [God's] judgment came, condemning all people [to physical death] because of one sin [i.e., Adam's]; even so the free gift of being made right with God and [resulting in] life may be received by all people because of one man's [i.e., Christ's] act of righteousness. [Note: This "life" may refer to spiritual life now, or to being made alive in the resurrection, which would reverse the curse of physical death caused by Adam's sin].

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

18 So then as through (AJ)one transgression (m)there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one (AK)act of righteousness (n)there resulted (AL)justification of life to all men.

18 So then, as through one trespass there is condemnation for everyone, so also through one righteous act there is life-giving justification(f)(AB) for everyone.

18 Consequently, just as one offense resulted in condemnation for everyone, so one act of righteousness results in justification and life for everyone.

19 For just as many people [i.e., all mankind] were considered [by God] to be sinners [and thus to suffer physical death] through the disobedience of the one man [i.e., Adam]; even so, many people [i.e., all believing mankind] will be considered right with God [and thus live again] through the obedience of the one man [i.e., Christ].

19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

19 For as through the one man’s disobedience (AM)the many (AN)were made sinners, even so through (AO)the obedience of the One (AP)the many will be made righteous.

19 For just as through one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners,(AC) so also through the one man’s obedience(AD) the many will be made righteous.

19 For just as through one man's disobedience many people were made sinners, so also through one man's obedience many people will be made righteous.

20 Now the law of Moses was introduced [into the world] in order to cause sin to increase [i.e., it defined many things to be wrong that were previously not regarded as sin]. But with the increase of sin, God's unearned favor increased all the more.

20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

20 (o)(AQ)The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, (AR)grace abounded all the more,

20 The law came along to multiply the trespass.(AE) But where sin multiplied, grace multiplied even more(AF)

20 Now the Law crept in so that the offense would increase. But where sin increased, grace increased even more,

21 This was so that just as sin ruled [over mankind], causing [physical] death, even so God's unearned favor would rule [over mankind], providing [them with] righteousness, and leading to never ending life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

21 so that, as (AS)sin reigned in death, even so (AT)grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

21 so that, just as sin reigned in death,(AG) so also grace will reign(AH) through righteousness, resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

21 so that, just as sin ruled by bringing death, so also grace might rule by bringing justification that results in eternal life through Jesus the Messiah, our Lord.
