A Warning to Priests

､ וְעַתָּ֗ה

wə·‘at·tāh,

Now ､

אֲלֵיכֶ֛ם

’ă·lê·ḵem

to

הַמִּצְוָ֥ה

ham·miṣ·wāh

הַזֹּ֖את

haz·zōṯ

､ הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃

hak·kō·hă·nîm.

אִם־

’im-

if

לֹ֣א

lō

not

､ תִשְׁמְע֡וּ

ṯiš·mə·‘ū

you will hear ､

וְאִם־

wə·’im-

and if

לֹא֩

lō

not

תָשִׂ֨ימוּ

ṯā·śî·mū

you will take [it]

עַל־

‘al-

to

､ לֵ֜ב

lêḇ

לָתֵ֧ת

lā·ṯêṯ

כָּב֣וֹד

kā·ḇō·wḏ

､ לִשְׁמִ֗י

liš·mî,

to My name ､

אָמַר֙

’ā·mar

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

､ צְבָא֔וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ,

of hosts ､

וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֤י

wə·šil·laḥ·tî

and I will send

בָכֶם֙

ḇā·ḵem

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

הַמְּאֵרָ֔ה

ham·mə·’ê·rāh,

וְאָרוֹתִ֖י

wə·’ā·rō·w·ṯî

and I will curse

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

– בִּרְכֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם

bir·ḵō·w·ṯê·ḵem;

your blessings –

､ וְגַם֙

wə·ḡam

and Yes already ､

אָרוֹתִ֔יהָ

’ā·rō·w·ṯî·hā,

I have cursed them

כִּ֥י

kî

אֵינְכֶ֖ם

’ê·nə·ḵem

not you

שָׂמִ֥ים

śā·mîm

do take [it]

עַל־

‘al-

to

. לֵֽב׃

lêḇ.

הִנְנִ֨י

hin·nî

גֹעֵ֤ר

ḡō·‘êr

I will rebuke

לָכֶם֙

lā·ḵem

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

､ הַזֶּ֔רַע

haz·ze·ra‘,

descendants ､

וְזֵרִ֤יתִי

wə·zê·rî·ṯî

פֶ֙רֶשׁ֙

p̄e·reš

עַל־

‘al-

on

､ פְּנֵיכֶ֔ם

pə·nê·ḵem,

פֶּ֖רֶשׁ

pe·reš

– חַגֵּיכֶ֑ם

ḥag·gê·ḵem;

of your [solemn] feasts –

וְנָשָׂ֥א

wə·nā·śā

and [one] will take away

אֶתְכֶ֖ם

’eṯ·ḵem

. אֵלָֽיו׃

’ê·lāw.

with it .

וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם

wî·ḏa‘·tem

Then you shall know

כִּ֚י

kî

שִׁלַּ֣חְתִּי

šil·laḥ·tî

אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם

’ă·lê·ḵem,

to you

אֵ֖ת

’êṯ

-

הַמִּצְוָ֣ה

ham·miṣ·wāh

הַזֹּ֑את

haz·zōṯ;

לִֽהְי֤וֹת

lih·yō·wṯ

that may continue

בְּרִיתִי֙

bə·rî·ṯî

אֶת־

’eṯ-

with

､ לֵוִ֔י

lê·wî,

Levi ､

אָמַ֖ר

’ā·mar

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

. צְבָאֽוֹת׃

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ.

of hosts .

בְּרִיתִ֣י ׀

bə·rî·ṯî

הָיְתָ֣ה

hā·yə·ṯāh

אִתּ֗וֹ

’it·tōw,

with him

הַֽחַיִּים֙

ha·ḥay·yîm

– וְהַ֨שָּׁל֔וֹם

wə·haš·šā·lō·wm,

and peace –

וָאֶתְּנֵֽם־

wā·’et·tə·nêm-

and I gave them

ל֥וֹ

lōw

to him

מוֹרָ֖א

mō·w·rā

[that he might] fear [Me]

וַיִּֽירָאֵ֑נִי

way·yî·rā·’ê·nî;

so he feared Me

וּמִפְּנֵ֥י

ū·mip·pə·nê

שְׁמִ֖י

šə·mî

נִחַ֥ת

ni·ḥaṯ

. הֽוּא׃

hū.

תּוֹרַ֤ת

tō·w·raṯ

The law

אֱמֶת֙

’ĕ·meṯ

הָיְתָ֣ה

hā·yə·ṯāh

､ בְּפִ֔יהוּ

bə·p̄î·hū,

in his mouth ､

וְעַוְלָ֖ה

wə·‘aw·lāh

לֹא־

lō-

not

נִמְצָ֣א

nim·ṣā

– בִשְׂפָתָ֑יו

ḇiś·p̄ā·ṯāw;

on his lips –

בְּשָׁל֤וֹם

bə·šā·lō·wm

､ וּבְמִישׁוֹר֙

ū·ḇə·mî·šō·wr

and equity ､

הָלַ֣ךְ

hā·laḵ

אִתִּ֔י

’it·tî,

with Me

וְרַבִּ֖ים

wə·rab·bîm

and many

הֵשִׁ֥יב

hê·šîḇ

. מֵעָוֺֽן׃

mê·‘ā·wōn.

from iniquity .

כִּֽי־

kî-

שִׂפְתֵ֤י

śip̄·ṯê

the lips

כֹהֵן֙

ḵō·hên

יִשְׁמְרוּ־

yiš·mə·rū-

､ דַ֔עַת

ḏa·‘aṯ,

וְתוֹרָ֖ה

wə·ṯō·w·rāh

and the law

יְבַקְשׁ֣וּ

yə·ḇaq·šū

[people] should seek

– מִפִּ֑יהוּ

mip·pî·hū;

from his mouth –

כִּ֛י

kî

מַלְאַ֥ךְ

mal·’aḵ

יְהוָֽה־

Yah·weh-

צְבָא֖וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ

. הֽוּא׃

hū.

he [is] .

וְאַתֶּם֙

wə·’at·tem

But you

סַרְתֶּ֣ם

sar·tem

מִן־

min-

– הַדֶּ֔רֶךְ

had·de·reḵ,

the way –

הִכְשַׁלְתֶּ֥ם

hiḵ·šal·tem

You have caused to stumble

רַבִּ֖ים

rab·bîm

– בַּתּוֹרָ֑ה

bat·tō·w·rāh;

at the law –

שִֽׁחַתֶּם֙

ši·ḥat·tem

You have corrupted

בְּרִ֣ית

bə·rîṯ

､ הַלֵּוִ֔י

hal·lê·wî,

of Levi ､

אָמַ֖ר

’ā·mar

יְהוָ֥ה

Yah·weh

. צְבָאֽוֹת׃

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ.

of hosts .

וְגַם־

wə·ḡam-

אֲנִ֞י

’ă·nî

I

נָתַ֧תִּי

nā·ṯat·tî

אֶתְכֶ֛ם

’eṯ·ḵem

נִבְזִ֥ים

niḇ·zîm

וּשְׁפָלִ֖ים

ū·šə·p̄ā·lîm

and base

לְכָל־

lə·ḵāl

､ הָעָ֑ם

hā·‘ām;

the people ､

כְּפִ֗י

kə·p̄î,

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

-

אֵֽינְכֶם֙

’ê·nə·ḵem

not you

שֹׁמְרִ֣ים

šō·mə·rîm

אֶת־

’eṯ-

､ דְּרָכַ֔י

də·rā·ḵay,

My ways ､

וְנֹשְׂאִ֥ים

wə·nō·śə·’îm

but have shown partiality

פָּנִ֖ים

pā·nîm

-

. בַּתּוֹרָֽה׃

bat·tō·w·rāh.

in the law .

Judah's Unfaithfulness

הֲל֨וֹא

hă·lō·w

Have we not

؟ אָ֤ב

’āḇ

אֶחָד֙

’e·ḥāḏ

לְכֻלָּ֔נוּ

lə·ḵul·lā·nū,

הֲל֛וֹא

hă·lō·w

Has not

אֵ֥ל

’êl

אֶֽחָ֖ד

’e·ḥāḏ

בְּרָאָ֑נוּ

bə·rā·’ā·nū;

מַדּ֗וּעַ

mad·dū·a‘,

נִבְגַּד֙

niḇ·gaḏ

do we deal treacherously

אִ֣ישׁ

’îš

､ בְּאָחִ֔יו

bə·’ā·ḥîw,

with another ､

לְחַלֵּ֖ל

lə·ḥal·lêl

בְּרִ֥ית

bə·rîṯ

؟ אֲבֹתֵֽינוּ׃

’ă·ḇō·ṯê·nū.

of the fathers ؟

､ בָּגְדָ֣ה

bā·ḡə·ḏāh

has dealt treacherously ､

יְהוּדָ֔ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

וְתוֹעֵבָ֛ה

wə·ṯō·w·‘ê·ḇāh

and an abomination

נֶעֶשְׂתָ֥ה

ne·‘eś·ṯāh

has been committed

בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל

ḇə·yiś·rā·’êl

– וּבִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם

ū·ḇî·rū·šā·lim;

and in Jerusalem –

כִּ֣י ׀

kî

חִלֵּ֣ל

ḥil·lêl

יְהוּדָ֗ה

yə·hū·ḏāh,

קֹ֤דֶשׁ

qō·ḏeš

holy [institution]

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

אֲשֶׁ֣ר

’ă·šer

､ אָהֵ֔ב

’ā·hêḇ,

He loves ､

וּבָעַ֖ל

ū·ḇā·‘al

and He has married

בַּת־

baṯ-

אֵ֥ל

’êl

of god

. נֵכָֽר׃

nê·ḵār.

יַכְרֵ֨ת

yaḵ·rêṯ

יְהוָ֜ה

Yah·weh

לָאִ֨ישׁ

lā·’îš

the man

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

יַעֲשֶׂ֙נָּה֙

ya·‘ă·śen·nāh

עֵ֣ר

‘êr

､ וְעֹנֶ֔ה

wə·‘ō·neh,

and aware ､

מֵאָהֳלֵ֖י

mê·’ā·ho·lê

､ יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב

ya·‘ă·qōḇ;

of Jacob ､

וּמַגִּ֣ישׁ

ū·mag·gîš

and yet who brings

מִנְחָ֔ה

min·ḥāh,

לַֽיהוָ֖ה

Yah·weh

. צְבָאֽוֹת׃

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ.

of hosts .

And this [is]

､ שֵׁנִ֣ית

šê·nîṯ

the second [thing] ､

תַּֽעֲשׂ֔וּ

ta·‘ă·śū,

you do

כַּסּ֤וֹת

kas·sō·wṯ

､ דִּמְעָה֙

dim·‘āh

with tears ､

אֶת־

’eṯ-

-

מִזְבַּ֣ח

miz·baḥ

יְהוָ֔ה

Yah·weh,

､ בְּכִ֖י

bə·ḵî

with weeping ､

､ וַֽאֲנָקָ֑ה

wa·’ă·nā·qāh;

and groaning ､

מֵאֵ֣ין

mê·’ên

not

､ ע֗וֹד

‘ō·wḏ,

פְּנוֹת֙

pə·nō·wṯ

so He does regard

אֶל־

’el-

הַמִּנְחָ֔ה

ham·min·ḥāh,

וְלָקַ֥חַת

wə·lā·qa·ḥaṯ

nor receive [it]

רָצ֖וֹן

rā·ṣō·wn

. מִיֶּדְכֶֽם׃

mî·yeḏ·ḵem.

from your hands .

､ וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם

wa·’ă·mar·tem

And yet you say ､

עַל־

‘al-

מָ֑ה

māh;

עַ֡ל

‘al

כִּי־

kî-

יְהוָה֩

Yah·weh

הֵעִ֨יד

hê·‘îḏ

has been witness

בֵּינְךָ֜

bê·nə·ḵā

וּבֵ֣ין ׀

ū·ḇên

and

אֵ֣שֶׁת

’ê·šeṯ

the wife

､ נְעוּרֶ֗יךָ

nə·‘ū·re·ḵā,

of your youth ､

אֲשֶׁ֤ר

’ă·šer

with whom

אַתָּה֙

’at·tāh

– בָּגַ֣דְתָּה

bā·ḡaḏ·tāh

have dealt treacherously –

בָּ֔הּ

bāh,

וְהִ֥יא

wə·hî

and yet she [is]

､ חֲבֶרְתְּךָ֖

ḥă·ḇer·tə·ḵā

your companion ､

וְאֵ֥שֶׁת

wə·’ê·šeṯ

and your wife by

. בְּרִיתֶֽךָ׃

bə·rî·ṯe·ḵā.

וְלֹא־

wə·lō-

But not

؟ אֶחָ֣ד

’e·ḥāḏ

one ؟

עָשָׂ֗ה

‘ā·śāh,

did He make [them]

וּשְׁאָ֥ר

ū·šə·’ār

and Having a remnant

. ר֙וּחַ֙

rū·aḥ

of the Spirit .

ל֔וֹ

lōw,

To him

וּמָה֙

ū·māh

and why

؟ הָֽאֶחָ֔ד

hā·’e·ḥāḏ,

one ؟

מְבַקֵּ֖שׁ

mə·ḇaq·qêš

. זֶ֣רַע

ze·ra‘

אֱלֹהִ֑ים

’ĕ·lō·hîm;

וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙

wə·niš·mar·tem

therefore take heed

､ בְּר֣וּחֲכֶ֔ם

bə·rū·ḥă·ḵem,

to your spirit ､

וּבְאֵ֥שֶׁת

ū·ḇə·’ê·šeṯ

and with the wife

נְעוּרֶ֖יךָ

nə·‘ū·re·ḵā

אַל־

’al-

. יִבְגֹּֽד׃

yiḇ·gōḏ.

let deal treacherously .

כִּֽי־

kî-

שָׂנֵ֣א

śā·nê

､ שַׁלַּ֗ח

šal·laḥ,

אָמַ֤ר

’ā·mar

､ יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

אֱלֹהֵ֣י

’ĕ·lō·hê

､ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל

yiś·rā·’êl,

of Israel ､

וְכִסָּ֤ה

wə·ḵis·sāh

חָמָס֙

ḥā·mās

עַל־

‘al-

with

､ לְבוּשׁ֔וֹ

lə·ḇū·šōw,

one's garment ､

אָמַ֖ר

’ā·mar

יְהוָ֣ה

Yah·weh

. צְבָא֑וֹת

ṣə·ḇā·’ō·wṯ;

of hosts .

וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֥ם

wə·niš·mar·tem

Therefore take heed

､ בְּרוּחֲכֶ֖ם

bə·rū·ḥă·ḵem

to your spirit ､

וְלֹ֥א

wə·lō

that not

. תִבְגֹּֽדוּ׃

ṯiḇ·gō·ḏū.

you do deal treacherously .

הוֹגַעְתֶּ֤ם

hō·w·ḡa‘·tem

You have wearied

יְהוָה֙

Yah·weh

. בְּדִבְרֵיכֶ֔ם

bə·ḏiḇ·rê·ḵem,

with your words .

､ וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם

wa·’ă·mar·tem

And yet you say ､

בַּמָּ֣ה

bam·māh

הוֹגָ֑עְנוּ

hō·w·ḡā·‘ə·nū;

have we wearied [Him]

､ בֶּאֱמָרְכֶ֗ם

be·’ĕ·mā·rə·ḵem,

in that you say ､

כָּל־

kāl-

עֹ֨שֵׂה

‘ō·śêh

רָ֜ע

rā‘

ט֣וֹב ׀

ṭō·wḇ

[Is] good

בְּעֵינֵ֣י

bə·‘ê·nê

in the sight

､ יְהוָ֗ה

Yah·weh

of Yahweh ､

וּבָהֶם֙

ū·ḇā·hem

and in them

ה֣וּא

hū

He

חָפֵ֔ץ

ḥā·p̄êṣ,

､ א֥וֹ

’ōw

Or ､

אַיֵּ֖ה

’ay·yêh

אֱלֹהֵ֥י

’ĕ·lō·hê

[is] the God

؟ הַמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

ham·miš·pāṭ.
