Mark 10:35-45 - A Request By James And John

³⁵ And James and John the sons of Zebedee came to him, and said: Teacher, we desire you to do for us whatever we shall ask.

³⁶ He said to them: "What do you wish me to do for you?

³⁷ They said to him: Grant to us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on thy left, in thy glory.

³⁸ Jesus said to them: You know not what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be immersed with the immersion with which I am immersed?

³⁹ They said to him: "We are able. Jesus said to them: You shall drink the cup that I drink, and you shall be immersed with the immersion with which I am immersed. ⁴⁰ But to sit on my right hand and on my left, is not mine to give; but it shall be given to those for whom it is prepared. ⁴¹ And when the ten heard it, they began to be displeased with James and John.

⁴² But Jesus called them to him, and said to them: You know that those who think they rule the Gentiles, act as lords over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. ⁴³ But it shall not be so among you. But whoever desires to be great among you, shall be your minister; ⁴⁴ and whoever among you desires to be first, shall be servant of all. ⁴⁵ For the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
