Mark 10:35-45 - A Request By James And John

And James and John the sons of Zebedee came to him, and said: Teacher, we desire you to do for us whatever we shall ask.

He said to them: "What do you wish me to do for you?

They said to him: Grant to us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on thy left, in thy glory.

Jesus said to them: You know not what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be immersed with the immersion with which I am immersed?

They said to him: "We are able. Jesus said to them: You shall drink the cup that I drink, and you shall be immersed with the immersion with which I am immersed. 40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left, is not mine to give; but it shall be given to those for whom it is prepared. 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be displeased with James and John.

But Jesus called them to him, and said to them: You know that those who think they rule the Gentiles, act as lords over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever desires to be great among you, shall be your minister; 44 and whoever among you desires to be first, shall be servant of all. 45 For the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
