Matthew 19:16-30 - A Rich Young Man
16 And behold, someone came up to him [and] said, "Teacher, what good [thing] must I do so that I will have eternal life?"
17 And he said to him, "Why are you asking me about [what is] good? There is one [who is] good. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments!"
18 He said to him, "Which [ones]?" And Jesus said, "Do not commit murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and your mother, and love your neighbor as yourself."
20 The young man said to him, "All these I have observed. What do I still lack?"
21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give [the proceeds] to the poor--and you will have treasure in heaven--and come, follow me."
22 But [when] the young man heard the statement, he went away sorrowful, because he was one who had many possessions.
23 And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I say to you that with difficulty a rich person will enter into the kingdom of heaven! 24 And again I say to you, it is easier [for] a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich person into the kingdom of God."
25 So [when] the disciples heard [this], they were extremely amazed, saying, "Then who can be saved?"
26 But Jesus looked at [them] [and] said to them, "With human beings this is impossible, but with God all [things] [are] possible."
27 Then Peter answered [and] said to him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed you. What then will there be for us?"
28 And Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you that in the renewal [of the world], when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me--you also will sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields on account of my name will receive a hundred times as much, and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many [who are] first will be last, and the last first.
17 And [as] he was setting out on [his] way, one [individual] ran up and knelt down before him [and] asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do so that I will inherit eternal life?"
18 So Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one [is] good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'"
20 And he said to him, "Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth."
21 And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "You lack one [thing]: Go, sell all that you have, and give [the proceeds] to the poor--and you will have treasure in heaven--and come, follow me." 22 But he looked gloomy at the statement [and] went away sorrowful, {because he had} many possessions.
23 And Jesus looked around [and] said to his disciples, "How {difficult it is for} those who possess wealth to enter into the kingdom of God!" 24 And the disciples were astounded at his words. But Jesus answered [and] said to them again, "Children, how difficult it is to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier [for] a camel to go through the eye of a needle than [for] a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God."
26 And they were very astounded, saying to one another, "And who can be saved?"
27 Jesus looked at them [and] said, "With human beings [it is] impossible, but not with God. For all [things] [are] possible with God."
28 Peter began to say to him, "Behold, we have left everything and followed you."
29 Jesus said, "Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields on account of me and on account of the gospel 30 {who will not} receive a hundred times as much now in this time--houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, together with persecutions--and in the age to come, eternal life. 31 But many [who are] first will be last, and the last first."
18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, "Good Teacher, [by] doing what will I inherit eternal life?"
19 And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one [is] good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.'"
21 And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth."
22 And [when he] heard [this], Jesus said to him, "{You still lack one thing}: Sell all that you have, and distribute [the proceeds] to the poor--and you will have treasure in heaven--and come, follow me."
23 But [when he] heard these [things] he became very sad, because he was extremely wealthy.
24 And Jesus took notice of him [and] said, "How {difficult it is for} those who possess wealth to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier [for] a camel to go through the eye of a needle than [for] a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 So those who heard [this] said, "And who can be saved?"
27 But he said, "[What is] impossible with men is possible with God."
28 And Peter said, "Behold, we have left {all that is ours} [and] followed you."
29 And he said to them, "Truly I say to you that there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children on account of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times more in this time and in the age to come, eternal life."
