Matthew 27:45-56 - Jesus Dies On The Cross
45 Now from twelve o'clock till three, darkness covered the whole land. 46 About three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God! My God! why have you forsaken me?"
47 Some of the bystanders, when they heard it, said, "He is calling for Elijah."
48 So one of them at once ran off and took a sponge and soaked it in vinegar, put it on a stick and held it up to Him to drink. 49 But the others said, "Wait, let us see if Elijah does come to deliver Him."
50 But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and gave up His spirit. 51 And at once the curtain of the sanctuary was torn from top to bottom, the earth shook, the rocks were split, 52 the tombs were opened, and many bodies of saints then sleeping in death rose 53 and left their tombs, and after His resurrection went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54 And the army captain and his men, who were keeping guard over Jesus, who felt the earthquake and saw all that was taking place, were terribly frightened, and said, "Surely this was God's Son."
55 Now several women were there looking on from a distance, who accompanied Jesus from Galilee to care for Him, 56 among them Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee's sons.
33 At twelve o'clock darkness covered the whole land and lasted until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three o'clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Eloi! Eloi! lama sabachthani?" which means, "My God! my God! why have you forsaken me?"
35 Some of the bystanders when they heard it said, "Listen! He is calling for Elijah!" 36 So one man ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and put it on a stick and held it up to Him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah does come to take Him down!"
37 Then Jesus gave a loud cry, and expired. 38 And the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the captain who stood facing him saw that He expired in this way, he said, "This man was surely God's Son!"
40 Now several women were there looking on from a distance, among them Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joses, and Salome, 41 who used to accompany Him when He was in Galilee, besides several other women who had come up to Jerusalem with Him.
44 It was already about noon, and darkness covered the whole country, and lasted until three o'clock, 45 for the sun had failed to shine. And the curtain before the sanctuary was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus uttered a loud cry, and said, "Father, I now commit my spirit to your care." As He said this He breathed His last.
47 When the captain saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "He certainly was an innocent man!" 48 And all the crowds who had come together for this sight, when they had seen what took place, returned to the city but continued to beat their breasts in grief. 49 But all His acquaintances, and the women who used to follow Him from Galilee in a group, were standing at a distance looking on.
28 After this, as Jesus knew that everything was now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, "I am thirsty." 29 A bowl full of sour wine was sitting there. So they put a sponge soaked in sour wine on a stick and put it to His lips.
30 As soon as Jesus took the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" Then He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
31 As it was the day of Preparation for the Passover, that the bodies might not remain on the crosses during the Sabbath, for that Sabbath was a very important one, the Jews requested Pilate to have their legs broken and their bodies taken down. 32 So the soldiers went and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with Him. 33 But when they came to Jesus, as they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs, 34 but one of the soldiers thrust a lance into His side and blood and water at once flowed out. 35 The man who saw it has testified to it -- and his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth -- in order that you too may come to believe it. 36 For this took place that this Scripture might be fulfilled, "Not a bone of His will be broken." 37 And again another Scripture says, "They shall look at Him whom they pierced."
