Matthew 27:15-26 - Pilate Releases Barabbas

Matthew 27:15-26

15 Now the governor used at the feast to release a prisoner to the people, whomsoever they desired: 16 and they had then a notorious malefactor named Barabbas. 17 Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? 18 Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ? for he knew that out of envy they had delivered Him up.

19 (And while he was sitting on the tribunal, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that righteous man: for I have suffered much in a dream to day on his account.)

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the common people to ask for Barabbas, and so to destroy Jesus. 21 And the governor said to them, Which of the two would you have me release to you? and they said, Barabbas.

22 What shall I do then, saith Pilate, with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all cried out, Let Him be crucified.

23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath He done? but they cried out the more, saying, Let Him be crucified.

24 Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just man, look ye to it:

25 and all the people answered and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. 26 Then he released to them Barabbas: but he ordered Jesus to be scourged, and delivered Him to be crucified.

Mark 15:6-15

6 Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired: 7 and there was one Barabbas under confinement with some of his accomplices in sedition, who had committed murder in the insurrection. 8 And the people clamoured and desired him to do as he always used to do for them. 9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Would ye have me release to you the king of the Jews? 10 (for he knew that the chief priests had delivered Him up to him out of envy:) 11 but the chief priests incited the people to desire that he would rather release Barabbas to them.

12 And Pilate answered, and said to them again, What then would you have me do with Him, whom ye call king of the Jews?

13 And they cried out again, Crucify Him.

14 But Pilate said unto them, Why, what ill has He done? And they cried out the more vehemently, Crucify Him.

15 So Pilate being willing to ingratiate with the multitude, released Barabbas to them, and having scourged Jesus, delivered Him up to be crucified.

Luke 23:13-25

13 And Pilate called together the chief priests, and the rulers, 14 and the people, and said unto them, Ye have brought to me this man as one that perverteth the people: and behold I have examined Him before you, and found nothing chargeable on Him, of the things you alledge against Him: 15 nor Herod neither; for I sent you to him, and behold nothing worthy of death is proved upon Him. 16 I will therefore chastise Him, and so release Him. 17 Now he was obliged to release one to them at the feast.

18 And they all cried out, saying, Away with this man, and release to us Barabbas: 19 (who for a riot in the city, and for murder, was committed to prison:)

20 Pilate therefore spake to them again, being desirous to release Jesus. 21 But they bawled out, saying, Crucify Him, crucify Him.

22 And he said to them a third time, what evil hath He done? I have found nothing in Him deserving death: I will therefore chastise Him, and let Him go.

23 But they insisted upon it with loud clamours, demanding Him to be crucified: and their voices and those of the chief priests prevailed. 24 So Pilate gave sentence that what they demanded should be done. 25 And he released to them him that for sedition and murder had been cast into prison, whom they desired; and delivered up Jesus to their will.
