Matthew 26:36-46 - The Prayer In Gethsemane

Matthew 26:36-46

36 Jesus went with them to Gethsemane. He said to his disciples: Sit here while I go over there and pray. 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him. He was sorrowful and very troubled. 38 He told them: My heart is deeply grieved to the point of death. Stay with me and watch. 39 Then he went forward a little, and fell on his face, and prayed: My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me: nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.

40 When he came to the disciples, they were sleeping. He said to Peter: Could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray continually that you do not enter into temptation!

42 A second time he went away and prayed, saying: Father, if this cannot pass away, except I drink it, your will be done. 43 He returned to find them sleeping again, for their eyes were heavy.

44 He went away to pray a third time, saying the same words. 45 After returning to the disciples, he said: Do you sleep now and take your rest? The hour is here and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Arise, let us go; the man who betrays me is here.

Mark 14:32-42

32 They came to a place called Gethsemane. He said to his disciples: Sit here while I pray. 33 He took Peter, James and John with him. He was very distressed and troubled. 34 He said to them: I am very sorrowful to the point of death. Stay here with me and watch. 35 He went forward a little ways and fell on the ground to pray. He prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass from him. 36 He said: Abba, Father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup from me. Even so not what I will, but what you will.

37 He returned to find them sleeping. He said to Peter, Simon why do you sleep? Could you not watch for one hour? 38 To avoid temptation watch and pray. The spirit truly is willing but the flesh is weak.

39 Again he went away and prayed, and spoke the same words. 40 He came and found them asleep again. They did not know what to say to him. 41 He came a third time and said to them: Sleep and take your rest. It is enough the hour has come. Look, the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners! 42 Rise up and let us go. He that betrays me is near.

Luke 22:39-46

39 He went to the Mount of Olives as was his custom and the disciples also followed him. 40 When he arrived he said to them: Pray that you do not enter into temptation. 41 He went a short distance from them and kneeled down and prayed. 42 He prayed: Father if it is your will remove this cup from me, nevertheless not my will, but your will be done.

43 An angel came to him and gave him strength. 44 (possible spurious text) He was in agony and earnestly prayed. His sweat became, as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground. 45 When he finished his prayer he went to the disciples, and found them sleeping because of their sorrow. 46 He said: Why do you sleep? Arise and pray that you do not enter into temptation.
