Birds of all kinds abound in Palestine, and the capture of these for the table and for other uses formed the employment of many persons. The traps and snares used for this purpose are mentioned Ho 5:1; Pr 7:23; 22:5; Am 3:5; Ps 69:22; comp. De 22:6-7.

When a bird's-nest chanceth to be before thee, - in the way, in any tree or upon the ground, whether with nestlings or eggs, and, the mother, be sitting upon the nestlings or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the mother upon the young; thou shalt let toll the mother, and then, her young, mayest thou take for thyself, - that it may go well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.

Used symbolically for Satan, from whose snares God delivers His saints. Ps 91:3; 124:7; Pr 6:5. In the punishment of Israel their prophets became as the snare of the fowler. Ho 9:8.
