frozen rain-drops; one of the plagues of Egypt (Ex 9:23). It is mentioned by Haggai as a divine judgment (Hag 2:17). A hail-storm destroyed the army of the Amorites when they fought against Joshua (Jos 10:11). Ezekiel represents the wall daubed with untempered mortar as destroyed by great hail-stones (Eze 13:11). And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven, and the LORD raised his voice and it hailed, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.

Particles of ice falling from the clouds. Though hail is usually formed by natural causes not yet perhaps well understood, it is often referred to in scripture as one of the judgements of God. It formed one of the plagues in Egypt. Ex 9:18-34; Ps 78:47-48; 105:32; and is at times connected with fire or lightning. God smote the Amalekites by 'great stones' from heaven. Jos 10:11. The hail is called upon to praise Jehovah, because it fulfils His word. Ps 148:8; Isa 28:2,17; Hag 2:17. It will also form a notable part of the judgements of God in His future dealings with this guilty world. Re 8:7; 11:19; 16:21.

Behold, tomorrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail, such as has not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now. He destroyed their vines with hail and their wild fig trees with stones. He gave up their cattle also to the hail and their flocks to thunderbolts of fire.
