1. "Son of the Maacathite," a "captain of the forces" who accompanied Johanan in waiting on Gedaliah, the governor over the Jewish remnant after the capture of Jerusalem, and afterward in rescuing them from Ishmael, and in going to Egypt in spite of the Lord's prohibition (2Ki 25:23; Jer 41:11; 43:4-5).
2. Son of Shaphan. Stood as leader in the midst of the 70 ancients (elders) of Israel with censers in their hands, worshipping idols portrayed upon the wall of the court of Jehovah's house; seen by Ezekiel (Eze 8:11). Shaphan was the scribe who read to Josiah the law. The son's spiritual privileges increased his guilt (2Ki 22:10-14). His very name, meaning" Jehovah hears," gave the lie to the unbelief which virtually said "Jehovah seeth not" (Eze 9:9; Ps 10:11,14; 50:21; 94:7,9). The elders incurred further guilt in usurping the priests' office by offering incense.
3. Son of Azur, leader of the 25 priests (Eze 11:1). Azur means help, their names reminding them, if they would have heeded it, that God would have "heard" if they had sought His "help" to save the city.
4. Jer 35:3.

Furthermore Shaphan the scribe showed the king saying, "Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me here a book." And Shaphan read it before the king. And the king, as soon as he had heard the words of the book of the law, he rent his clothes read more. and commanded Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king's, saying, "Go ye and seek of the LORD for me, and the people, and for all Judah; concerning the words of this book that is found. For it is a great wrath of the LORD that is kindled upon us, that our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do in all points as it is written therein." And Hilkiah the high priest and Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went unto Huldah the Prophetess, wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah the son of Harahas keeper of the robes - which Prophetess dwelt in Jerusalem in the second ward - and communed with her.
And when all the captains of the men of war and the men heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizphah: Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite and Jaazaniah the son of Maachathi and their men.
He hath said in his heart, "Tush, God hath forgotten, he hath turned away his face, so that he will never see it."
Surely thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest ungodliness and wrong, that thou mayest take the matter into thy hand. The poor committeth himself unto thee, for thou art the helper of the friendless.
This thou doest, while I hold my tongue: and thinkest wickedly that I am even such a one as thyself; but I will reprove thee, and set before thee the things that thou hast done.
And yet they say, "Tush, the LORD seeth not, the God of Jacob regardeth it not."
He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? He that made the eye, shall not he see?
Then took I Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah the son of Habazziniah, and his brethren and all his sons, and the whole household of the Rechabites:
But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all they which had been captains over the king's Host with him, heard of all the wickedness that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done;
So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the host, and all the people, followed not the commandment of the LORD: Namely, to dwell in the land of Judah. But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the host, carried away all the remnant in Judah, that were come together again from the Heathen among whom they had been scattered, to dwell in the land of Judah:
There stood also before the images: Seventy lords of the counsel of the house of Israel; and in the midst of them stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan. And every one of them had a censor in his hand, and out of the incense there went a smoke, as it had been a cloud.
Then said he unto me, "The wickedness of the house of Israel and Judah is very great: so that the land is full of blood, and the city full of unfaithfulness. For they say, 'Tush, the LORD regardeth not the earth, he seeth us not.'
Moreover, the spirit of the LORD lift me up, and brought me unto the east port of the LORD's house. And behold, there were twenty five men under the door: among whom I saw Jaazaniah the son of Azzur, and Pelatiah the son of Benaiah, the rulers of the people.
