the fourth of the catholic or "general" epistles. It was evidently written by John the evangelist, and probably also at Ephesus, and when the writer was in advanced age. The purpose of the apostle (1Jo 1:1-4) is to declare the Word of Life to those to whom he writes, in order that they might be united in fellowship with the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. He shows that the means of union with God are, (1) on the part of Christ, his atoning work (1Jo 1:7; 2:2; 3:5; 4:10,14; 5:11-12) and his advocacy (1Jo 2:1); and (2), on the part of man, holiness (1Jo 1:6), obedience (1Jo 2:3), purity (1Jo 3:3), faith (1Jo 3:23; 4:3; 5:5), and love (1Jo 2:7-8; 3:14; 4:7; 5:1).

What was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we beheld, and our own hands felt, concerning the word of life; (And the life was manifested, and we have seen, and we testify, and announce to you the eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested to us;) read more. What we have seen and heard we announce to you, that ye also might have communion with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. And these we write to you, that your joy might be filled up.
If we say that we have communion with him, and walk in darkness, we are deceived, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have communion with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every sin.
My little children, I write these to you, that ye sin not. And if any sin, we have an intercessor with the Father, Jesus Christ the just: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. read more. Brethren, I write no new command to you, but an old command which ye had from the beginning. The old command is the word which ye heard from the beginning. Again, I write a new command to you, which is true in him and in you: for the darkness is passed away, and the true light already shines.
And every one having this hope in him purifies himself, as he himself is pure.
And ye know that he was manifested that he might let go our sins; and in him is no sin.
We know that we have passed from death to life, for we love the brethren. He not loving the brother remains in death.
And this is his command, That we believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us command.
And every spirit which acknowledges not Jesus Christ having come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that of antichrist which ye have heard comes; and now is already in the world.
Dearly beloved, we should love one another: for love is of God; and every one loving has been born of God, and knows God.
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son a propitiation for our sins.
And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his. Son a Saviour of the world.
Everyone believing that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God: and every one loving him having begotten, loves him also begotten of him.
Who is he conquering the world, if not he believing that Jesus is the Son of God?
And this is the testimony, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He having the Son has life; and he not having the Son of God has not life.
Morish
This was doubtless written after the epistles of Peter and Paul. Morally John's writings have their place when the church as a testimony had failed, and the 'last time' had arrived. The three Epistles come in between the Gospel of John and the Revelation. The real remedy for the evils spoken of is the coming in of the Lord as the faithful witness.
