1. The second son of Jacob and Leah (Ge 29:33 Jahwist). By Redactor he, together with Levi, is closely related to Dinah, she being a full sister (Ge 29:34). From Ge 30:20 (Elohist) we learn that he had five full brothers, but we are not told how many other sisters or half-sisters he had. Jahwist (Ge 37:35) speaks of 'all' Jacob's 'daughters,' but their names are nowhere recorded (cf. Ge 46:7 Priestly Narrative). Jahwist, who is specially inclined to etymologizing (see Revised Version margin of Ge 3:20; 4:1,25; 5:29; 11:9; 16:11,14 etc.), connects the name, as in the case of Reuben, with Jacob's 'hatred' of Leah: 'Because Jahweh hath heard (sh

And Bethlebaoth, and Sharuhen; thirteen cities and their villages: Ain, Remmon, and Ether, and Ashan; four cities and their villages: And all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalathbeer, Ramath of the south. This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families. Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon: for the part of the children of Judah was too much for them: therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them.
And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.
And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.
And they went to the entrance of Gedor, even unto the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks.
