They spat on him and took the staff and struck him repeatedly on the head.

Then some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying, "Prophesy!" The guards also took him and beat him.

Now the men who were holding Jesus under guard began to mock him and beat him.

They came up to him again and again and said, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck him repeatedly in the face.



"If men fight, and one strikes his neighbor with a stone or with his fist and he does not die, but must remain in bed,

You will go to the Levitical priests and the judge in office in those days and seek a solution; they will render a verdict. You must then do as they have determined at that place the Lord chooses. You must do what you are instructed, and the verdict they pronounce to you, without fail. Do not deviate right or left from what they tell you. The person who pays no attention to the priest currently serving the Lord your God there, or to the verdict -- that person must die, so that you may purge evil from Israel.

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, do not resist the evildoer. But whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other to him as well.



Let him offer his cheek to the one who hits him; let him have his fill of insults.
