An altar of earth shalt thou make unto me, and shalt sacrifice on it thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep and thine oxen: in all places where I shall make my name to be remembered, I will come unto thee, and bless thee. And if thou make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone; for if thou lift up thy sharp tool upon it, thou hast profaned it. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.
And there shalt thou build an altar to Jehovah thy God, an altar of stones; thou shalt not lift up an iron tool upon them; of whole stones shalt thou build the altar of Jehovah thy God; and thou shalt offer up burnt-offerings thereon to Jehovah thy God. And thou shalt sacrifice peace-offerings, and shalt eat there, and rejoice before Jehovah thy God.
Then Joshua built an altar to Jehovah the God of Israel, in mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of Jehovah had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which iron had not been lifted up. And they offered up burnt-offerings on it to Jehovah, and sacrificed peace-offerings.

And these are the measures of the altar in cubits: the cubit is a cubit and a hand breadth. The bottom was a cubit in height and the breadth a cubit, and its border on the edge thereof round about, one span: and this was the base of the altar.
