This is why righteousness is of faith, that it may be a free gift; so that the promise stands firm to all Abraham's posterity; not to his children of his faith. For in the sight of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead, and calls into being that which is not, Abraham is the father of us all both Jews and Gentiles, as it is written, I have made you a father of many nations. Exult in this, though now for a brief moment, if need be, you have suffered many hardships. These are in order that the test of your faith, more precious than gold that is perishable and yet is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor, at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

My brothers, when you are beset by various temptations, count it all joy, because you know that the testing of your faith is working out endurance.
