Now [as he] was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew, throwing a casting net into the sea (for they were fishermen). And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the [son] of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. And immediately they left the boat and their father [and] followed him.

And [as] Jesus was going away from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth and said to him, "Follow me!" And he stood up [and] followed him. And it happened [as] he {was dining} in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners were coming [and] {dining} with Jesus and his disciples.

Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James the [son] of Zebedee, and John his brother, Philip, and Bartholomew, Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector, James the [son] of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot--the one who also betrayed him.

And he went up on the mountain and summoned [those] whom he wanted, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve, so that they would be with him and so that he could send them out to preach and to have authority to expel demons. read more.

On the next day again John was standing [there], and two of his disciples, and looking at Jesus [as he] was walking by, he said, "Look! The Lamb of God!" And the two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus. read more.
And Jesus, turning around and seeing them following [him], said to them, "What do you seek?" And they said to him, "Rabbi" (which means [when] translated "Teacher"), "where are you staying?" He said to them, "Come and you will see!" So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day (it was about the tenth hour). Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who heard John and followed him. This one first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah!" (which is translated "Christ"). He brought him to Jesus. Looking at him, Jesus said, "You are Simon the son of John. You will be called Cephas" (which is interpreted "Peter"). On the next day he wanted to depart for Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, "Follow me!" (Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.) And Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see!" Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Look! {A true Israelite} in whom is no deceit!" Nathanael said to him, "From where do you know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, [when you] were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the king of Israel!" Jesus answered and said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater [things] than these!" And he said to him, "Truly, truly I say to all of you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."
