When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, "If this man were really a prophet, he would know who and what the woman is who is touching him, for she leads a wicked life."

And the Pharisees and scribes grumbled, and said, "This man welcomes irreligious people, and even eats with them!"

When Jesus reached the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, come down quickly! for I must stay at your house today." And he came down quickly and welcomed him gladly. And when they saw this, everyone complained, and said, "He has gone to stay with an irreligious man!"


And the Pharisees and scribes grumbled, and said, "This man welcomes irreligious people, and even eats with them!"


And the Pharisees observed it, and they said to his disciples, "Why does your master eat with tax-collectors and irreligious people?"

But the Pharisees saw it and said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing something which it is against the Law to do on the Sabbath!"

"Why do your disciples break the rules handed down by our ancestors? For they eat their bread without first washing their hands."

And when the scribes who were of the Pharisees' party saw that he was eating with irreligious people and tax-collectors, they said to his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax-collectors and irreligious people?"

They had noticed that some of his disciples ate their food without first giving their hands a ceremonial washing to purify them.

And when they saw this, everyone complained, and said, "He has gone to stay with an irreligious man!"

The Jews complained of him for saying, "I am the bread that has come out of heaven,"


And when they saw this, everyone complained, and said, "He has gone to stay with an irreligious man!"


And he went into Jericho and was passing through it. Now there was a man named Zaccheus, the principal tax-collector, a rich man, who wanted to see who Jesus was, and he could not because of the crowd, for he was a small man. read more.
So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree, to see him, for Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, come down quickly! for I must stay at your house today." And he came down quickly and welcomed him gladly. I will give half my property to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay him four times as much." Jesus said to him, "Salvation has come to this house today, for he too is a descendant of Abraham. For the Son of Man has come to search for what was lost and to save it."

The Jews complained of him for saying, "I am the bread that has come out of heaven," and they said, "Is he not Joseph's son, Jesus, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down out of heaven'?" Jesus answered, "Do not complain to one another.

This led the Jews to dispute with one another. They said, "How can he give us his flesh to eat?"
