Then some of those who stood there, hearing him, said, This man is calling out for Elias. And immediately one of them, running, and taking a sponge, and filling it with vinegar, and fastening it to a pole, put it to him to drink. The others said, Let him alone, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Then Jesus crying again with a loud voice gave up the ghost. And, lo! the vail of the temple was rent in two, from the upper part to the bottom; and the earth was shaken; and the rocks were rent; and the sepulchres were opened; and many bodies of saints, who slept, arose; and coming out of the sepulchres after his resurrection, entered into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

And the centurion observing what had come to pass, glorified God, saying, Verily this man was a righteous person. And all his acquaintance stood afar off, and the women which followed him from Galilee, beholding these things.

So the soldiers therefore did these things. Now beside the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then beheld his mother, and the disciple whom he loved, standing by, he saith to his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour the disciple took her unto his own home. After this, Jesus, conscious that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was placed a vessel full of vinegar: they then filling a spunge with the vinegar, and putting it on a stick of hyssop, carried it to his mouth. When therefore Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and inclining his head, he surrendered up his spirit.
