And all the people and the tax-collectors who heard Him justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, not being baptized by him.
And they asked him and said, Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor that Prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but One stands among you whom you do not know.
And I did not know Him, but that He be revealed to Israel, therefore I have come baptizing with water.
And I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water, that One said to me, Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending, and remaining upon Him, He is the One who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.
And John was also baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there. And they came and were baptized.
And He went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John baptized at the first, and He stayed there.
For John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.

And if you will receive it, this is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. But to what shall I compare to this generation? It is like little children sitting in the markets and calling to their playmates, saying, We played the flute to you, and you did not dance! We mourned to you, but you did not wail! For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon. The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man who is a glutton and a winebibber, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners. But wisdom was justified by her children.

For I say to you, Among those who are born of woman there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist. But he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a tax-collector.
The Pharisees and the Sadducees came to Him, tempting Him. And they asked Him that He would show them a sign from Heaven.
