How often is the lamp of the wicked put out and their destruction comes upon them, and God distributes sorrows upon them in his anger.
He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation and trouble by sending evil angels among them. He made a way to his anger; he did not spare their soul from death but gave their life over to the pestilence and smote all the firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham:
Through the wrath of the LORD of the hosts the land is darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire; no man shall spare his brother.
Therefore thus hath the Lord GOD said: Behold, my anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man and upon beast and upon the trees of the field and upon the fruit of the ground, and it shall burn and shall not be quenched.
They shall cast their silver in the streets and their gold far from them their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD; they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels because it shall be the stumblingblock of their iniquity.
But with whom was he indignant forty years? Was it not with those that had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?
