And He said unto them as He was teaching them, Beware of the scribes, who love to walk in long robes, and salutations in public-places, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and uppermost places at feasts; who devour widows houses, and for a shew of religion make long prayers: these shall receive the heavier judgement.

The scribes and pharisees sit in the seat of Moses: observe therefore and do all things whatsoever they tell you to observe; but do not ye according to their works, for they say and do not: for they bind grievous and intolerable burthens, and impose them upon men; but they themselves will not put a finger to them: read more.
but they do all their works to be seen by men; they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge the fringes of their garments, and love the uppermost places at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and salutations in public assemblies, and to be called by men Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your instructor even Christ, and ye are all brethren. Neither call any man upon earth Father; for one is your Father, who is in heaven: neither be ye called masters; for one is your master, even Christ. But let him that is greatest among you be your minister: and whosoever will exalt himself shall be abased, and whosoever will humble himself shall be exalted. But wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, nor suffer those that are entering to go in. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye devour widows houses, and for a cover make long prayers: therefore ye shall receive the heavier judgement. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites: for ye compass sea and land to make a proselyte, and when he is gained, ye make him more the child of hell than yourselves. Wo unto you, ye blind guides, who say, If any one swear by the temple, it is nothing; but if any man swear by the gold of the temple, the oath is binding. Foolish and blind creatures! for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, If any one swear by the altar, it is nothing; but if any one swear by the gift upon it, he is bound. O foolish and blind! for which is greater, the gift, or the altar which sanctifieth the gift? He then, that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it and by all things upon it: and he, that sweareth by the temple, sweareth by it, and by Him that dwelleth in it: and he, that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by Him that sitteth upon it. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, who tithe even your mint, and anise, and cummin, but neglect the weightier matters of the law, judgement, mercy, and fidelity: these ye ought undoubtedly to practise, and not to omit the others. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel! Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; for ye clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of rapine and intemperance: thou blind pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside of them may be also clean. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; who are like whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful without, but within are full of the bones of the dead, and all manner of filthiness; so do ye likewise outwardly appear to men to be righteous, but within are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites; who build the tombs of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the just, and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been concerned with them in shedding the blood of the prophets: so that ye are witnesses yourselves, that ye are the children of those who killed the prophets: fill up then the measure of your fathers, ye serpents, ye brood of vipers: how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

And they send to Him some of the pharisees, and of the Herodians to insnare Him in his discourse: and these, when they came, said to Him, Master, we know that thou art a man of truth, and carest for no man; for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to pay tribute to Cesar, or not? should we give, or should we not give? But He knew their hypocrisy, and said to them, Why do ye tempt me? bring me a penny, that I may see it. read more.
So they brought one: and He saith to them, Whose is this image and inscription? And they said Cesar's. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Render then unto Cesar the things that are Cesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at Him. Then come the sadducees to Him, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked Him, saying, Master, Moses, in his writings tells us, if any one's brother die, and leave a wife, and leave no children, that his brother shall take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife and died and left no seed; and the second took her, and died, and he left no seed neither; and the third likewise. And all the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all died the woman also. In the resurrection therefore, when they rise again, whose wife shall be of them; for all the seven had her to wife? And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, nor the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels in heaven. But as to the dead, that they are raised, have ye not read in the book of Moses, how God spake to him in the bush, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living: therefore ye do greatly mistake. And one of the scribes, who heard them disputing, seeing that He answered them well, came to Him and asked Him, Which is the chief commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, "Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the one Lord, and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength:" this is the first or chief commandment, and the second is like it, even this, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself:" there is no other commandment greater than these. And the scribe said unto Him, Truly, Master, thou hast spoke exceeding well; for there is one God, and there is no other beside Him. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole-burnt-offerings and sacrifices. And Jesus seeing that he answered discreetly, said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one dared any more to put questions to Him. And Jesus spake and said, as He was teaching in the temple, How do the scribes say, that the Christ is the son of David? for David himself said by the holy Spirit, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand till I make thine enemies thy footstool. So that David himself calleth Him Lord: how then is He his son? And many of the people heard Him with pleasure. But the Lord said unto him, ye pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but your inward part is full of rapine and wickedness. Senseless creatures! Did not He who made the outside, make also that which is within? give alms rather according to your ability: and behold all things are clean to you. read more.

And one of the doctors of the law answered and said unto Him, Master, in saying these things thou reproachest us also. And He said, Wo unto you also, ye interpreters of the law, for ye load men with insupportable burthens, and ye yourselves touch not the burthens with one of your fingers. Wo unto you; who build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Thus ye testify that ye approve of the deeds of your fathers; for they put them to death, and ye build their sepulchres. And therefore the wisdom of God hath said, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute: that the blood of all the prophets which has been shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple. Verily I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. Wo unto you interpreters of the law; for ye have taken away the key of knowledge, ye entered not in yourselves, and those that were entering in, ye hindered. As He was saying these things unto them the scribes and pharisees began vehemently to attack Him, and urge Him to speak of many things, laying snares for Him, and endeavouring to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse Him.

Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world, I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, whither the Jews are continually resorting: and in secret have said nothing. Why dost thou ask me?

And they come again to Jerusalem, and as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and scribes, and elders come to Him, and ask Him, By what authority dost thou these things, and who gave thee this authority, to do thus? But Jesus said to them, I also will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. read more.
The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men? answer me. And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say, from heaven; He will say, why then did ye not believe him? but if we should say, from men --- they feared the people: (for they they all thought that John was a prophet indeed:) and they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And as Jesus was sitting over against the treasury, He saw how the people threw money into the treasury, and many of the rich put in much; and there came a poor widow and put in two mites, that is, a farthing. And He called his disciples to Him, and saith unto them, Verily I tell you, that this poor widow has given more than all those who have cast into the treasury. For they all have contributed out of their abundance: but she out of her penury hath given all that she had, even her whole living.

I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye did not seize me: but this is done that the scriptures may be fulfilled.

Afterwards Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art healed; sin no more, least something worse befal thee. And the man went away, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had healed him. And for this did the Jews persecute Jesus, and endeavoured to put Him to death; because He had done these things on the sabbath-day. read more.
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh without intermission, and so do I.

But when it was now about the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught. And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, who never learnt? Jesus answered them and said, The doctrine that I teach is not mine, but his that sent me. read more.
If any man desire to do his will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. He, that speaketh from himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh the glory of Him that sent him is true, and there is no imposture in him. Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you observeth the law? wherefore else do ye seek to kill me? The people answered and said, Thou art possessed by a demon: who seeketh to kill thee? Jesus answered and said unto them, I performed one miracle on the sabbath, and ye are all amazed at it. Now Moses gave you the law of circumcision, (not that it is originally from Moses, but from the patriarchs,) and ye circumcise even on the sabbath: if then a man receive circumcision on the sabbath-day, that the law of Moses may not be broken; are ye angry with me, because I made a man perfectly well on the sabbath-day? Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgement. Therefore some of those of Jerusalem said, Is not this He whom they seek to put to death? and here He talketh openly, and they say nothing to Him: Do the rulers indeed know, that this is in truth the Messiah? But we know whence this man is; whereas when Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence He is. Jesus therefore cried out in the temple, teaching and saying, Ye both know me, ye say, and ye know whence I am: now I am not come of myself, but He that sent me is true, whom ye know not.

And Jesus was walking about the temple, in Solomon's portico. Then the Jews came round Him, and said unto Him, How long dost thou hold us in suspense? If thou be the Messiah, tell us plainly. Jesus answered them, I have told you, and ye do not believe me: though the works that I do in the name of my Father, testify of me. read more.
But ye believe not; because ye are not of my sheep: for as I said unto you, my sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; nor shall any one force them out of my hand. My Father who gave them to me, is greater than all: and therefore none is able to force them out of my Father's hand. I and the Father are one. Then the Jews again took up stones to stone Him. But Jesus said unto them, Many good works have I shewn you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered Him, saying, We do not go about to stone thee for a good work, but for blasphemy; and because thou being a man makest thyself God. Jesus replied, Is it not written in your law, "I have said, ye are gods?" And if it stiled them gods, to whom the word of God came, (and the scripture cannot be made void,) do ye say of Him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, thou blasphemest, because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in Him.
