And Jesus spake and said, as He was teaching in the temple, How do the scribes say, that the Christ is the son of David?

and having summoned together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he enquired of them where the Messiah was to be born: and they told him, at Bethlehem in Judea;

And his disciples asked Him, saying, Why then do the scribes say, that Elias must first come?



but when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonders that He wrought, and the children crying out in the temple, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were vexed to the heart, and said to Him, Dost thou hear what these say?

But there were some of the scribes sitting there, and reasoning in their hearts, Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God?


And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, and forced him along with them, and brought him to the council:

And on the morrow their rulers, and elders, and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem:

So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all, nor teach in the name of Jesus.


they gathered together again, and one of them, an interpreter of the law, propounded a question, to try Him,

And one of the scribes, who heard them disputing, seeing that He answered them well, came to Him and asked Him, Which is the chief commandment of all?


Now the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people were then assembled together into the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas:

though the chief priests and scribes stood vehemently accusing Him.



for He taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.


Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputant of the age? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?


And He said unto them as He was teaching them, Beware of the scribes, who love to walk in long robes, and salutations in public-places, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and uppermost places at feasts;


Wo unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites: for ye compass sea and land to make a proselyte, and when he is gained, ye make him more the child of hell than yourselves.




So there was a great clamor: and the scribes that were of the party of the pharisees rose up and contended, saying, We find no evil in this man; but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
