Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false testimony against Jesus so they could put him to death; and they found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward. But at last two false witnesses came forward, and said, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.'"
And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebul," and, "By the prince of the demons he casts out the demons."
They led Jesus away to the high priest. All the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes came together. Peter had followed him from a distance, until he came into the court of the high priest. They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding paying taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king."
They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we would not have delivered him up to you."
