And I did not recognize him, but He who sent me to baptize in water said to me, 'The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and resting upon him, is he who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.'

John also was baptizing in Aenon, near Salim, because there were many streams there, and people kept coming to receive baptism.

and went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained.


"you know the message spread throughout all Judea, beginning in Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;

With many other exhortations then John declared the gospel to the people; but Herod, the Tetrarch, when reproved by him because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and because of all the wicked deeds that he had done, added yet this above them all that he shut up John in prison. Now after all the people had been baptized, and Jesus himself had been baptized and was praying,

The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said: "Behold, that is God's Lamb, who takes and bears away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes One who has been put before me, for he was before me.'
