accordingly, John baptized in the desart, and preach'd the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins.

under the pontificate of Annas and Caiaphas, JOHN, the son of Zacharias, received his divine commission in the wilderness. in pursuance of which, he went into all the country about Jordan, exhorting all to repent and be baptized, in order to obtain the remission of their sins.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. he came as a witness, to represent what he knew of the light, that by his means all might be convinc'd. he was not that Light, but was sent to testify of that light.
