Thematic Bible: Of john on the island of patmos

Thematic Bible

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning like a flambeau, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters. the name of the star was wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse appear'd; and he that sat upon him was called the faithful and the true: in righteousness he judges and makes war: his eyes were as a flame of fire, on his head were many crowns: and a name inscrib'd which no one comprehended, but himself: he had a vesture dipt in blood: and his name is called, the logos of God. read more.
and the armies of heaven followed him upon white horses, cloathed in fine linnen, white and clean. out of his mouth went a sharp sword, in order to smite the nations: for he shall rule them with an iron sceptre: and tread the wine-press of the fierce vengeance of almighty God. on the mantle about his thigh was this inscription, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. and another angel came out from the altar, who presided over the fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, "stretch out thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are full ripe." so the angel stretch'd out his sickle to the earth, and gathered the vintage of the earth, and cast it into the great wine-press of the divine vengeance.

Then I beheld another beast coming out of the earth, it had two horns like a lamb, but it spake like a dragon. he exercised all the power of the first beast by his authority, and caused the earth, and those who dwell therein, to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. he perform'd great wonders, so as to make fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men. read more.
and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive. he had power likewise to animate the image made for the beast, so that the image was made to speak, and as many as would not worship the image were order'd to be killed. he likewise obliged all, both small and great, rich and poor, the freeman and the slave, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and order'd, that no body should buy or sell unless he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. here is wisdom. let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred sixty six.

again I looked, and I saw a white cloud, and there was sitting upon the cloud one like the son of man, having a crown of gold upon his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand. and another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, "thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the reaping time is come; for the harvest of the earth is ripe." so he that sat on the cloud, stretch'd out his sickle to the earth; and the earth was reaped. read more.
Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. and another angel came out from the altar, who presided over the fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, "stretch out thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are full ripe." so the angel stretch'd out his sickle to the earth, and gathered the vintage of the earth, and cast it into the great wine-press of the divine vengeance. and the grapes were press'd without the City, and blood came out of the wine-press, even to the horse-bridles: for the space of sixteen hundred furlongs.

again I looked, and I saw a white cloud, and there was sitting upon the cloud one like the son of man, having a crown of gold upon his head, and a sharp sickle in his hand. and another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, "thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the reaping time is come; for the harvest of the earth is ripe." so he that sat on the cloud, stretch'd out his sickle to the earth; and the earth was reaped.

he also having a sharp sickle. and another angel came out from the altar, who presided over the fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, "stretch out thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are full ripe." so the angel stretch'd out his sickle to the earth, and gathered the vintage of the earth, and cast it into the great wine-press of the divine vengeance. and the grapes were press'd without the City, and blood came out of the wine-press, even to the horse-bridles: for the space of sixteen hundred furlongs.

I saw likewise an angel standing upon the sun; and he cryed with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, "come and gather your selves together to the supper of the great God; that ye may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses, and of those that ride on them, the flesh of all that are free, and all that are slaves, both small and great." Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. read more.
and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. all the rest were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were satiated with their flesh.

Afterwards I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, with a great chain in his hand. and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil and satan, and bound him for a thousand years, then cast him into the bottomless pit, there shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should seduce the nations no more, till the thousand years should he fulfilled: and after that, he was to be loosed for a short time. read more.
I saw likewise thrones, where persons were seated, to whom the power of judging was given: and I saw the souls of those that were beheaded for the testimony they had given to Jesus, and for the word of God, who had not worshipped the beast, nor his image, nor had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. but the rest of the dead shall not live again until the thousand years are finished. this is the first resurrection. happy and holy are they that have part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God, and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. When the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, and shall go out to seduce the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them to battle: they will be as numerous as the sand of the sea. they will spread on the surface of the earth, and encompass the camp of the saints, and the beloved city: and fire shall descend from God out of heaven, and devour them. the devil that seduced them, shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

And a second angel followed, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, because she has made all nations drink of the deadly wine of her fornication." And a third angel followed them, crying with a loud voice, "if any man worship the beast, or his image, or receive his mark on his forehead, or in his hand, he shall drink of the wine of the divine vengeance, the strongest wine that can be poured out of the cup of his indignation; He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the lamb: read more.
the smoke of their torment shall ascend for ever and ever: they who worship the beast or his image, they who receive the mark of his name, shall have no rest either day or night." here is the patience of the saints, who keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. Then I heard a voice from heaven, saying to me, "write, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; yes, from henceforth, saith the spirit, they shall rest from their labours; and the recompence of their labours shall follow them."

there I was in an exstacy on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a loud voice, like the sound of a trumpet, saying, "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, what you shall see, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia; to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea." and I turned to see from whence the voice came that spake to me. and turning about, I saw seven golden candlesticks; read more.
and in the midst of the seven candlesticks, one who resembled the son of man, cloathed with a garment down to the foot, and girt below the breast with a girdle of gold. his head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; his feet were like fine brass, when glowing in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. in his right hand he held seven stars: out of his mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and his countenance was as the sun shining in his full glory. as soon as I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead: but he laid his right hand upon me, and said, "Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth; I was dead; but now you see I am alive for all eternity, amen; and I have the keys of the grave, and of death." write what you have seen, the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter. the conceal'd meaning of the seven stars which you saw in my right hand, and of the seven golden candlesticks, is this: the seven stars signify the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which you saw, signify the seven churches.

Then I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns; upon his horns were ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. and the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority. and I saw one of his heads, as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world went wondring after the beast. read more.
They worshipped the dragon which had given his power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?" there was given to him a mouth speaking great things, and blasphemy; and power was given to him for two and forty months. and he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and those that dwell in heaven, he was permitted to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all the tribes, and provinces, and nations. all that dwell upon the earth will worship him, whose names are not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb, that was slain. if any man have an ear, let him hear. he hath leadeth into captivity, shall be led into captivity: he that killeth with the sword, shall perish by the sword. here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

Then I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, invested with a cloud, a rainbow was upon his head, his face was like the sun, and his feet like pillars of fire. he held in his hand a little book open: his right foot was upon the sea, and his left foot on the land. his voice was as loud as the roaring of a lion: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. read more.
and when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: but I heard a voice saying to me, "seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not." Then the angel which I saw standing upon the sea, and upon the land, lifted up his hand to heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created the heaven and all that is therein, the earth and all that is therein, the sea and all that is therein, "that the time should be no longer defer'd." but when the seventh angel should speak, and the trumpet should sound, the mystery of God should be accomplish'd, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets. And the voice which I heard from heaven, spake to me again, and said, "go, take the little book that is open, from the hand of the angel who stands upon the sea, and upon the land." so I went to the angel, and said to him, "give me the little book." and he said to me, "take it, and eat it up; it shall prove bitter in thy bowels, but in thy mouth it shall be as sweet as honey." immediately having took the little book out of the angel's hand, I swallowed it down: and in my mouth it was as sweet as honey: but as soon as I had swallowed it, it was bitter within me.

and the number of the horse of that army were two hundred millions: for I heard them number'd. the horses I saw in my vision had this appearance: the riders had breast-plates of fire, of jacinth, and brimstone: the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire, smoke, and brimstone. by these three the third part of men were killed, by the fire, by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths. read more.
for the power of these horses is in their mouths, and in their tails: for their tails were like serpents, and had heads, with which they do mischief.

And there appeared another wonder in heaven, it was a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. his tail swept the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, in order to devour her child as soon as it was born. and she brought forth a man-child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up to be with God, and about his throne. read more.
but the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her maintenance, during a thousand two hundred and threescore days. Then there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; on the other side fought the dragon with his angels: but these were defeated, they lost their place in heaven: the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him. then I heard a loud voice, which cry'd in the heaven, "the time of salvation, and power, the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ are now come: for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, is cast down. they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last. therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. WO to the land, and to the sea: for the devil is come down unto you, in great rage, because he knows that his time is but short." The dragon then finding that he was precipitated to the earth, persecuted the woman, who brought forth the man-child. but to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her place, where she is to be maintain'd for a time, and times, and half a time. and the serpent spouted from his throat a flood of water, after the woman, in order to drown her with the flood. but the earth helped the woman, for the earth opened its jaws, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon threw out of his throat, which so enrag'd the dragon against the woman, that he went to make war with the rest of her race, who keep the commandments of God, and bear testimony to Jesus.

by virtue of my power, my two witnesses shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days cloathed in sackcloth. these are the two olive-trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the Lord of the earth. if any man should offer to hurt them, fire will proceed out of their mouth, and destroy their enemies: whoever should hurt them, would by this means perish. read more.
during their prophecy they have power to prevent any rain descending from heaven: their power extends over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with what plagues they please. when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit, will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them. their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which in the mystical stile is called Sodom and Egypt, where our Lord was crucified. the people of different tribes, languages, and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and not suffer them to be buried in the grave. the inhabitants of the land will rejoice, and triumph over them, they will send presents to one another; because the two prophets had gall'd the inhabitants of the land. but after three days and an half, the spirit of life from God enter'd into them: they stood upon their feet, and great fear fell upon those who saw them. then they heard a great voice from heaven, saying to them, "come up hither." and they ascended up to heaven in a cloud, and their enemies beheld them.

Then I saw another angel fly in the mid-heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those that dwell on the earth, to every nation, tribe, province, and people, crying with a loud voice, "fear the Lord, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come: adore therefore him that made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and the fountains."

Then there was given me a reed like a rod: with this direction, rise and measure the temple of God, with the altar, and those that worship therein. but don't measure the court which is without; for it is given to the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they trample under foot two and forty months.

THEN I looked, and I saw a lamb on mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his name and his father's name writ on their foreheads. and I heard a voice from heaven, which was like the noise of many waters, or like a great thunder-clap: I heard too a sound like that of a harp, when touch'd by the hand of a musician. and a new song was sung before the throne, and before the four animals, and the elders: and no one could learn that song, but the hundred forty four thousand, who were ransom'd from the earth. read more.
these are they who were not defiled with women: for they are virgins: these are they who follow the lamb wherever he goes: these were ransom'd from among men, being the first fruits unto God, and to the lamb. in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without defect.

And after these things I heard a great voice of a numerous multitude in heaven, saying, "alleluia; salvation, glory, honour, and power unto the Lord our God: for just and right are his judgments; for he hath condemned the grand prostitute, who corrupted the earth with her licentiousness, and hath avenged the blood of his servants that were shed by her hand." again they said, "alleluia." and her smoke. rose up for ever and ever. read more.
Then the four and twenty elders, and the four animals fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, "amen; alleluia." and a voice came out of the throne, saying, "praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great." and I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, which was like the sound of many waters, or like a volley of thunder, saying, "alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent does reign." let us rejoyce, and triumph, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the lamb is come, and his spouse is already adorn'd. for she was permitted to be arrayed in fine linnen, clean and white: for the fine linnen represents the virtues of the saints." and he said unto me, "write, happy are they who are invited to the marriage-supper of the lamb." and he said to me, "thus I have delivered the real oracles of God."

his voice was as loud as the roaring of a lion: and when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. and when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write: but I heard a voice saying to me, "seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not."

Then there was war in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; on the other side fought the dragon with his angels: but these were defeated, they lost their place in heaven: the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him.

and there came out of the smoke locusts upon the land; and to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power. and they were commanded not to hurt the fruits of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree; but those men who have not the seal of God in their foreheads. and to them was power given, not to kill them, but to torment them five months: and their pain was like the pain which a scorpion produces when it strikes a man. read more.
in those days shall men seek for death, but shall not find it; they will desire to die, and death will shun them. the figure of the locusts were like that of horses prepared to battle; but on their heads they had, as it were, crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. their hair was like that of women, and their teeth like the teeth of lions. they were vested with breast-plates, as it were of iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots and many horses running to battle. they had stings in their tails like scorpions; and they had leave to molest men for five months with their stings. they had for their king the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek his name is Apollyon.

and I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud vioce to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, saying, "hurt not the earth, nor the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads." And I heard the number of those who were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred forty and four thousand, of all the tribes of the children of Israel. read more.
of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Nephthalim were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Manasses were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Isachar were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand.

And the second angel sounded, and a great mountain as it were all on fire was cast into the sea; and the third part of the sea became blood: and the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

he also having a sharp sickle. and another angel came out from the altar, who presided over the fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, "stretch out thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are full ripe."

and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before the throne; the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out. of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

the second wo is past, and behold, the third wo soon follows.

Before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and towards the throne, and round about the throne were four ANIMALS full of eyes before and behind. the first animal was like a lion, the second animal like a calf, the third animal appear'd like a man, and the fourth animal was like a flying eagle. the four animals had each of them six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within; and they never ceas'd day and night, crying, HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, Lord God ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS, WHO IS, AND WHO WILL BE. and when those animals gave glory,

And I saw in the right hand of him that sate on the throne, A BOOK written within and on the backside, sealed with seven SEALS. and I saw a powerful angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof." and no one in heaven, nor in earth, nor under the earth, was able to open the book, or to look therein. read more.
and I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and read the book, nor to look therein. and one of the elders said to me, weep not: behold, the lion of the tribe of Juda, the offspring of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof.

Immediately I was in an extasy: and I saw a throne placed in heaven, and one sitting on the throne. he that sat, appear'd to the sight, like a jasper, and a sardine stone: and there was an arch like a rain-bow, round about the throne, which had the appearance of an emerald.

Then I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose presence the earth and the heaven fled away, so that they disappear'd.

at the same time there was a great earthquake; the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake seven thousand men were slain: and the remnant were frighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

I look'd, and there was a white horse; and he that sat on him had a bow, and a crown was given unto him, and he went forth like a conqueror, to gain conquests. When he had opened the second seal, I heard the second animal say, "come and see." and there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon, to banish peace from the land, and to make men kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. read more.
When he had opened the third seal, I heard the third animal say, "come and see." and I beheld, and saw a black horse; and he that sat on him had a balance in his hand. and I heard a voice from amidst the four animals say, " a measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; but don't touch the oil and the wine." When he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth animal say, "come and see." and I looked, and there was a pale horse; the name of him that sat thereon was DEATH, and the Grave followed with him: and power was given to them, over the fourth part of the land to kill with sword, with famine, with pestilence, and with wild beasts.

And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkned, and the day lost a third part of its light, and the night likewise.

Immediately the FIRST went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisom and grievous ulcer upon the men who had the mark of the beast, and upon those who worshipped his image.

saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates."

when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit, will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.

these are the two olive-trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the Lord of the earth.

the name of the star was wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

but don't measure the court which is without; for it is given to the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they trample under foot two and forty months.

The SECOND angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.

After that I looked, and the tabernacle of the testimony in the heavenly temple was opened:

Then he shewed me a pure river of living water, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God, and of the lamb.

and I saw as it were a sea of glass, mingled with fire; and those that had been victorious over the beast, and over his image, and over the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, with their divine harps in their hands.

Before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal: and towards the throne, and round about the throne were four ANIMALS full of eyes before and behind.

in the midst of the area, surrounded by the river, was the tree of life, which had twelve fruit-seasons, yielding its fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.

round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty Elders sitting, cloathed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold.

the first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, which fell upon the earth: and a third part of the earth, and a third part of the trees was burnt up, and all the green grass.

when he had taken the book, the four animals, and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, every one of them having harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of the saints.

out of the throne proceeded lightnings, and thundrings, and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.

After these things, I saw FOUR ANGELS standing on the four corners of the land, holding the four winds of the land, that the wind should not blow on the land, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

At another time I had a vision, when I saw a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard talking to me, was like the sound of a trumpet; which said, "come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter."

and the angel took the censer, and having filled it with the fire of the altar, he cast it upon the land: and there was a noise of thunders, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

and he opened the bottomless pit, and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit.
