Thematic Bible: The purpose of government

Be subject therefore to every human form of government, for the Lord's sake: whether it be to a king as supreme; or to governors as persons sent by him for the punishment of evil-doers, and the praise of them that do well.

Let every soul be subject to the powers that are over them: for there is no such power but from God: the powers that are over men, are appointed by God. So that he who resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive condemnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil.
