Thematic Bible
Law » What is the fulfilling of the law
If you really fulfil the royal law laid down by scripture, You must love your neighbour as yourself, well and good;
Well then, whatever you would like men to do to you, do just the same to them; that is the meaning of the Law and the prophets.
Now a jurist got up to tempt him. "Teacher," he said, "what am I to do to inherit life eternal?" He said to him, "What is written in the law? What do you read there?" He replied, "You must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole strength, and with your whole mind. Also your neighbour as yourself." read more.
"A right answer!" said Jesus; "do that and you will live."

Be in debt to no man ??apart from the debt of love one to another. He who loves his fellow-man has fulfilled the law. You must not commit adultery, you must not kill, you must not steal, you must not covet ??these and any other command are summed up in a single word, You must love your neighbour as yourself. Love never wrongs a neighbour; that is why love is the fulfilment of the law.
For the entire Law is summed up in one word, in You must love your neighbour as yourself
"Teacher," he said, "what is the greatest command in the Law?" He replied, "You must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, and with your whole mind. This is the greatest and chief command. read more.
There is a second like it: you must love your neighbour as yourself. The whole Law and the prophets hang upon these two commands."

Then a scribe came up, who had listened to the discussion. Knowing Jesus had given them an apt answer, he put this question to him, "What is the chief of all the commands?" Jesus replied, "The chief one is: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord, and you must love the Lord your God with your whole heart, with your whole soul, with your whole mind, and with your whole strength. read more.
The second is this: You must love your neighbour as yourself. There is no other command greater than these." The scribe said to him, "Right, teacher! You have truly said, He is One, and there is none else but Him. Also, to love him with the whole heart, with the whole understanding, and with the whole strength, and to love one's neighbour as oneself ??that is far more than all holocausts and sacrifices."
