So Peter was kept in prison, but fervent and persistent prayer for him was being made to God by the church.
The latter [preach Christ] out of love, because they know that I have been put here [by God on purpose] for the defense of the gospel;
Is anyone among you sick? He must call for the elders (spiritual leaders) of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another [your false steps, your offenses], and pray for one another, that you may be healed and restored. The heartfelt and persistent prayer of a righteous man (believer) can accomplish much [when put into action and made effective by God—it is dynamic and can have tremendous power].
Rejoice with those who rejoice [sharing others’ joy], and weep with those who weep [sharing others’ grief].
Carry one another’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the requirements of the law of Christ [that is, the law of Christian love].
“For the despairing man there should be kindness from his friend;
So that he does not abandon (turn away from) the fear of the Almighty.
Remember those who are in prison, as if you were their fellow prisoner, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body [and subject to physical suffering].
Pure and unblemished religion [as it is expressed in outward acts] in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit and look after the fatherless and the widows in their distress, and to keep oneself uncontaminated by the [secular] world.
“[But instead] I could strengthen and encourage you with [the words of] my mouth,
And the consolation and solace of my lips would soothe your suffering and lessen your anguish.
“I chose a way for them and sat as chief,
And dwelt as a king among his soldiers,
As one who comforts mourners.
who comforts and encourages us in every trouble so that we will be able to comfort and encourage those who are in any kind of trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
Therefore comfort and encourage one another with these words [concerning our reunion with believers who have died].
And if you offer yourself to [assist] the hungry
And satisfy the need of the afflicted,
Then your light will rise in darkness
And your gloom will become like midday.
and has a reputation for good deeds; [she is eligible] if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the feet of the saints (God’s people), if she has assisted the distressed, and has devoted herself to doing good in every way.
Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
Do justice and maintain the rights of the afflicted and destitute.
Do not rob the poor because he is poor [and defenseless],
Nor crush the afflicted [by legal proceedings] at the gate [where the city court is held],
Give strong drink [as medicine] to him who is ready to pass away,
And wine to him whose life is bitter.
