Then young children were brought to him, that he might lay his hands on them and pray. His disciples interfered, but Jesus said to them. "Let the little children come to me, and forbid them not; for it is to the childlike that the kingdom of heaven belongs."
Now people were bringing little children to Jesus for him to touch them; but the disciples rebuked them. Jesus was indignant when he saw it, and said: "Let the little children come to me. Do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such. I tell you true that unless a man receives the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not even enter it."read more.
Then he took them in his arms, and laid his hand upon them in blessing.
And they kept bringing their babies for him to touch them; but when his disciples saw it they began to rebuke them. But Jesus called for the babies. "Let the little children come to me," he said, "do not hinder them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven. "I tell you in solemn truth that whoever will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child, he will never get into it."
At that time Jesus answered and said: "I praise thee, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hidden these things from the wise and wary, and hast revealed them to the children.
In the same hour he thrilled with joy in the Holy Ghost. "I praise thee, Father, Lord of Heaven and Earth," he said "for hiding these things from the wise and prudent, and for revealing them to babes. Yea, Father, for so it was well pleasing in thy sight!
For consider your own calling, brothers, that not many wise in earthly wisdom, not many powerful, not many of noble birth, have been called. No, God has chosen the world's folly to confound its philosophy; and the world's weakness to confound its strength. When he had called a little child to him, Jesus set him among them, and answered. "In solemn truth I tell you that unless you turn and become like little children, you will not even enter the kingdom of heaven. "Whoever therefore will humble himself like this little child, is greatest in the kingdom of heaven;read more.
"and whoever receives one such child for my sake, receives me.
Then Jesus took a little child, set it among them, and folding it in his arms, he said, "Whoever in my name receives one such little child, receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me, but Him who sent me."
And Jesus who knew the dispute that was in their hearts, took a young child, and placed him by his side; then he said to them. "Whoever shall receive this little child in my name receives me; and whoever shall receive me receives him that sent me. For it is the lowliest among you all who is great."
"Whoever receives you is receiving me, and he who receives me is receiving Him who sent me. "Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet, shall receive a prophet's reward; and whoever receives a righteous man, shall receive a righteous man's reward. "And whoever gives to drink to one of these little ones a cup of cold water only, because he is a disciple, I tell you in solemn truth, he shall not lose his reward.
For whoever gives you even a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, in solemn truth I tell you, that he shall certainly not lose his reward.
"See to it that you never despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father in heaven.
Brothers, do not become children in understanding; be babes in malice, but in understanding become mature men.
Like new-born babes long for the pure spiritual milk to make you grow up into salvation; since you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
When I was a child I spoke like a child, felt like a child, thought like a child; now that I am become a man, I have done with childish things.
For every one who feeds on milk is inexperienced in the word of righteousness. He is still an infant.
"For the promise belongs to you and to your children and to all who are afar off, whomever the Lord may call."
Honor your father and mother (this is the first commandment with a promise attached), that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.
"But whoever shall cause one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung about his neck, and he were drowned in the depths of the sea.
"And if any one shall cause one of these little ones who believe on me to stumble, it would be better for him if he were thrown out into the sea with a great millstone about his neck.
Furthermore, our earthly fathers used to discipline us, and we gave them reverence. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live?
but if any widow has children or grandchildren, let these learn to show their piety first toward their own household, and to make some return to their parents, for that is pleasing in God's sight.
You younger men must submit to the presbyters; and all of you must put on the garment of humility and serve one another, for God resists the haughty, But gives grace to the humble.
