Then some Scribes and Pharisees from Jerusalem came to Jesus, saying, "Why do your disciples keep transgressing the tradition of the elders by not washing their hands before eating?"

So the Pharisees and Scribes asked him. "Why do your disciples not follow the traditions of the elders? Why do they eat with 'common' unwashed hands?"

For the Pharisees and all of the Jews do not eat until they have ceremoniously washed their hands in obedience to the tradition of the elders;

And when the morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, how they might put him to death.

There was held in Jerusalem, next morning, a meeting of their rulers, the elders and scribes,

"The chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me about him, when I was at Jerusalem, demanding a sentence against him.
