Jesus, being aware of their thoughts, said, "O, you people with [such] little faith! Why are you reasoning among yourselves about not having bread? Do you not understand yet or remember that five thousand people [were fed] with five loaves of bread and how many baskets [of pieces] were picked up [afterward]? Or that four thousand people [were fed] with seven loaves of bread and how many baskets [of pieces] were picked up [afterward]?read more.
How is it that you do not understand that I was not speaking to you about [physical] bread? But [rather I meant] watch out for the yeast [i.e., the influence] of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
But His disciples did not understand what He meant and were afraid to ask Him.
But they did not understand what He was talking about, for it was hidden from them, so that they would not understand its meaning. And they were afraid to ask Him about what He had said.
But His disciples did not understand [what He meant by] any of these things, for this message was hidden from them so they did not comprehend what He was saying.

The people [who heard this] did not understand that Jesus was speaking to them about the Father.
Now Jesus had been talking about Lazarus' death, but the disciples thought He was referring to normal sleep.
Those who accompanied me saw the light clearly, but did not hear [i.e., understand] the voice of the one speaking to me.
For if you [ask God to] bless with your spirit [i.e., in a language supernaturally], how will the person there, who does not have the gift [i.e., of interpreting the language] be able to say, "May it be so," when you offer [a prayer of] thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
Jesus told them this parable [i.e., a brief story to illustrate his teaching] but they did not understand what it meant.
Why do you people not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot [bear to] listen to my message.
