But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
But it is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel, nor are they all children of Abraham because they are his descendants; but, "Through Isaac shall your descendants be named." So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the man of faith.
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him. And to him Abraham gave a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest continually.
Now if perfection could have been through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not one designated according to the order of Aaron? For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must also be a change of the law. For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar.read more.
For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave and one by the free woman. But the son by the slave was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise. The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.
