"I have overthrown some of you, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a burning stick plucked out of the fire; yet you haven't returned to me," says the LORD.

The word of the LORD came to him, saying, "Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you." He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to be his adversary. The LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan. Yes, the LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you. Isn't this a burning stick plucked out of the fire?"

For the dill are not threshed with a sharp instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned over the cumin; but the dill is beaten out with a stick, and the cumin with a rod.

They will eat, and not have enough. They will play the prostitute, and will not increase; because they have abandoned giving to the LORD. Prostitution, wine, and new wine take away understanding. My people consult with their wooden idol, and answer to a stick of wood. Indeed the spirit of prostitution has led them astray, and they have been unfaithful to their God.

They appear darker than soot; they are not known in the streets. Their skin cleaves to their bones; it is withered and has become as dry as a stick.
