they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such. What do you say?" They said this to test him, that they might have something of which to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger. And when they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her." And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it went away one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last, and Jesus was left alone, with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more."
So they took up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple.
The Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" The Jews answered him, "For a good work we do not stone you, but for blasphemy, and because you, being a man, make yourself God."
Then they cast him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit."
