the disciples seeing him walking on the sea, cry'd out in a fright, an apparition; and they scream'd for fear. but Jesus immediately call'd to them, take courage, said he, it is I, don't be afraid.

when they saw him walking upon the sea, they thought it was an apparition, for they all saw him, and were greatly terrified. but at the instant Jesus spoke to them, and said, take courage, it is I, don't be afraid.

and said to his servants, this is John the baptist, he is risen from the dead, and consequently is invested with miraculous power.

In the mean time king Herod heard of Jesus, whose name was now celebrated, and he said, John the Baptist is risen from the dead, no wonder then that he works miracles.

but the people who reverenc'd them,

for considering, as I pass'd along, the deitys, which you adore, I met with an altar that had this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. now that GOD whom you worship without knowing him, is the same that I denounce to you.

when Simon saw that the holy spirit was given by imposition of the hands of the apostles, he offered them money, saying, give me too this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands he may receive the holy spirit.

While they were thus talking, Jesus himself appear'd in the midst of them, and said to them, peace be with you. but they were in a consternation and fright, imagining, that they saw a spirit.

are you mad? said they. but she persisting that it was even so, they reply'd, it is then his angel.

Upon this, certain vagabond Jews, who were exorcists, pretended to cure demoniacs by pronouncing the name of the Lord Jesus: their form being this, "I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches."

when Paul having taken up some brush-wood and laid it upon the fire, a viper started out from the heat, and seiz'd upon his hand. the barbarians seeing the venomous creature hang fast to his hand, said to one another, this man is a murderer, no doubt; for, escaped from the wreck, the divine justice still pursues him to death.

When the people saw what Paul had done, they cry'd out in the Lycaonian tongue, the Gods have assum'd a human form, and are descended among us. Barnabas, they stiled Jupiter; and Paul, Mercury, because he was the chief speaker. even the priest of Jupiter, whose statue was at the city-gates, brought oxen and garlands there, and together with the people, would have offer'd sacrifice to the apostles.

but Paul shook off the animal into the fire without having receiv'd any hurt. however, they expected to have seen him swell, or suddenly die away. but when they had waited a good while, and saw no harm come to him, they were of another opinion, and said he was a God.

I John saw these things, and heard them. and when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel, who shewed me these things. but he said to me, "forbear, I am the servant of God, as you are, and your brethren the prophets, and those who observe the words of this book: worship God."

At my departure from Macedonia, I advised you to stay at Ephesus in order to charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, or trouble their heads with fables and endless genealogies, which rather promote disputes than the gospel-dispensation:

If any one deviate from this doctrine, not adhering to the wholesome instructions of our Lord Jesus Christ, the true doctrine of piety, he is full of pride and ignorance, touch'd with a spirit of chicanery and wrangling, productive of envy, contention, calumny,

Now the spirit says expresly, that in the latter times some shall abandon the faith, by giving credit to seducing spirits, and the doctrine concerning demons;

As for the rest of the men who were not killed by these plagues, they did not repent of their evil actions, so as to forbear worshipping demons, and idols of gold and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk: nor did they repent of their murders, of their poisoning, of their brutality, nor of their robberys.
