for the pharisees, and indeed all the Jews, do not eat till they have washed their hands thoroughly, observing the tradition of the ancients. And when they come from the market, they do not eat till they have washed. And there are many other things, which they have received to observe, as the washing of cups, and pots, and brass-vessels, and seats.

and when He was twelve years old, going up to Jerusalem, as usual at the feast, and having finished the time,

So they took the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen cloths, with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

Now I commend you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

yet try all things, and hold fast that which is good.

and the things which thou hast heard from me, before many witnesses, these commit to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.

For I received from the Lord, that which I also delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which He was betrayed took bread:

being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone:

Therefore, brethren, be steady, and hold fast the traditions, which ye have been taught, whether by word or by our letter.

Now we charge you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to withdraw yourselves from every brother who walketh disorderly, and not according to the instruction which he received from us.

But He answered and said unto them, And why do ye transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God commanded saying, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: but ye say, If any man say to his father or mother, "that which thou mightest be profited by from me is a gift to the temple,"read more.
and so honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. And thus have ye made void the commandment of God by your tradition.

And ye expressly annul the commandment of God, that ye may retain your own tradition; for Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He that revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: but ye say, If a man tell his father or mother, That which thou mightest be profited by from me is Corban, (that is, a gift to the temple) it sufficeth:read more.
and so ye allow him to do nothing more for his father or his mother: making void the word of God by your tradition,. And many such like things ye do.

Take heed least any one make a prey of you by philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, after the elements of the world, and not after Christ:

If therefore ye be dead with Christ from the elements of the world; why, as if living in the world, are ye subject to ceremonial ordinances, (such as "touch not, taste not, handle not," which all tend to corruption in the using,) according to the commandments and doctrines of men?

This testimony is true: for which cause rebuke them sharply, that they may be found in the faith; not attending to Jewish fables, and the precepts of men who turn away from the truth.

And as the disciples of John, and of the pharisees used to fast, they came to Him, saying, Why do the disciples of John and of the pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the bridemen fast, when the bridegroom is with them? while the bridegroom is with them, they cannot fast: but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them; and then shall they fast.read more.
No man seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment; otherwise, it's new patch teareth from the old, and the rent is made worse: nor does any one put new wine into old vessels; otherwise the new wine bursteth the vessels, and the wine is spilt, and the vessels are destroyed: but new wine should be put into new vessels.

Then also come to Him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the pharisees fast much, but thy disciples do not fast? And Jesus said unto them, Can the friends of the bridegroom mourn, while the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then they will fast. As no one putteth a piece of new cloth to an old garment; for its new patch teareth away from the old garment, and the rent is made worse:read more.
nor do they put new wine into old vessels; otherwise, the casks burst, and the wine is spilt, and the vessels are destroyed: but they put new wine into new vessels, and both are preserved.

And they said unto Him, Why do the disciples of John frequently fast and pray, and likewise those of the pharisees; but thine eat and drink? And He said unto them, Can ye make those of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, then they will fast.read more.
Then He spake a parable to them, That no one putteth a piece of new cloth upon an old garment: otherwise, the new maketh a rent, and doth not match the old: nor doth any one put new wine in to old vessels; otherwise, the new wine will burst the casks, and be spilled, and the vessels will be destroyed: but new wine must be put into new vessels, and then both are saved. And no one that has been drinking old wine, immediately desireth new; for he saith, the old is better.

knowing that ye were redeemed from your vain conversation learned by tradition from your fathers, not with corruptible things, as silver and gold; but with the precious blood of Christ as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat.

Then the pharisees and the scribes ask Him, Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients, but eat without washing their hands?

But when Peter came to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was indeed to be blamed. For before certain men came from James, he did eat with the gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those of the circumcision. And the rest of the Jews dissembled also with him; so that Barnabas too was carried away with their dissimulation.read more.
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all,---If thou, who art a Jew, livest sometimes after the manner of the gentiles, and not like the Jews, why dost thou now in a manner compel the gentiles to judaize? We, who are Jews by birth, and not sinners of the gentiles, knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

But now that ye know God, or rather are known by God, how is it that ye turn again to the poor weak elements, to which ye desire again to be in bondage as before? Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years: so that I am afraid for you, least I have indeed bestowed upon you labour in vain.
