He tried to see what Jesus was like; but, being short, he was unable to do so because of the crowd.

Are you greater than our ancestor Abraham, who died? And the Prophets died too. Whom do you make yourself out to be?"

"Who are you?" they asked. "Why ask exactly what I have been telling you?" said Jesus.

"Who are you, Lord?" he asked. "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting," the voice answered;

When he had entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred, and asked--

But they were struck with great awe, and said to one another: "Who can this be that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

"Where is your faith?" he exclaimed. But in great awe and amazement they said to one another: "Who can this be, that he commands even the winds and the waves, and they obey him?"

But Herod himself said: "John I beheaded; but who is this of whom I hear such things?" And he endeavored to see him.

"Tell me who he is, Sir," he replied, "so that I may believe in him."

"We," replied the people, "have learned from the Law that the 'Christ is to remain for ever'; how is it, then, that you say that the Son of Man must be 'lifted up' Who is this 'Son of Man'?"

On this, those at table began to say to one another: "Who is this man who even pardons sins?"

The Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees began debating about this. "Who is this man who speaks so blasphemously?" they asked. "Who can forgive sins except God?"

On coming into the neighborhood of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus asked his disciples this question-- "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"

Afterwards Jesus and his disciples went into the villages round Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples this question-- "Who do people say that I am?"

Afterwards, when Jesus was alone, praying, his disciples joined him, and he asked them this question-- "Who do the people say that I am?"

And asked--" Are you 'The Coming One,' or are we to look for someone else?"

So he summoned two of them, and sent them to the Master to ask--"Are you 'The Coming One,' or are we to look for some one else?"

When these men found Jesus, they said: "John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask--'Are you 'The Coming One,' or are we to look for somebody else?'"

"Are you the King of the Jews?" asked Pilate. "It is true," replied Jesus.

"Are you the King of the Jews?" Pilate asked him. "It is true," replied Jesus.

"So you are a King after all!" exclaimed Pilate. "Yes, it is true I am a King," answered Jesus. "I was born for this, I have come into the world for this--to bear testimony to the Truth. Every one who is on the side of Truth listens to my voice."

But Jesus remained silent. On this the High Priest said to him: "I adjure you, by the Living God, to tell us whether you are the Christ, the Son of God."

But Jesus remained silent, and made no answer. A second time the High Priest questioned him. "Are you," he asked, "the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?"

"If you are the Christ," they said, "tell us so." "If I tell you," replied Jesus, "you will not believe me;

At this all the people were astounded. "Is it possible that this is the son of David?" they exclaimed.

When the Jews gathered round him, and said: "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us so frankly."

"Are you, then, the Son of God?" they all asked. "It is true," answered Jesus, "I am."

And the Tempter came to him, and said: "If you are God's Son, tell these stones to become loaves of bread."

"If you are God's Son, throw yourself down, for Scripture says- -'He will give his angels commands about thee, And on their hands they will upbear thee, Lest ever thou shouldst strike thy foot against a stone.'"

"You who 'destroy the Temple and build one in three days,' save yourself! If you are God's Son, come down from the cross!"

So the Devil said to him: "If you are God's Son, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread."

The Devil next led him into Jerusalem, and, placing him on the parapet of the Temple, said: "If you are God's Son throw yourself down from here,

as they strove to discern what that time could be, to which the Spirit of Christ within them was pointing, when foretelling the sufferings that would befall Christ, and the glories that would follow.
