The God of this people chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they sojourned in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm he brought them out from it. And for about forty years, he cherished them in the wilderness. And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land among them by lot.

It is not possible that the word of God has failed; for they are not all Israel who are of Israel. Nor, because they are the posterity of Abraham, are they all children: but in Isaac shall your posterity be called. That is, the children of the flesh are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted for the posterity.

What then? Israel has not obtained that which he seeks; but the chosen have obtained it, and the rest have been hardened to this day, as it is written: God has given them a spirit of stupor, eyes with which they can not see, and ears with which they can not hear.
